A machine is any device that helps to get work done easier. The two categories or groups of machines are simple machines and complex machines.
A simple machine is any device that's made from only one component. They all make work easier and have few or no moving parts. There are a total of six simple machines. These are the wedge, screw, lever, pulley, inclined plane and the wheel and axle.
A screw is like an inclined plane wrapped around a center rod. They can be used to lift things or hold things together tighter. An example of a screw is a spiral staircase.
The wheel and axle has a wheel with a rod (axle) attached to its center. In some cases sit works as a lever by multiplying force such as a doorknob. In other cases it is used to move objects easier such as the wheel on a bicycle.
