A triangle is the half the size of a rectangle. Therefore, the area of a triangle is half the area of a rectangle.

Write the formula
Identify the base
Identify the height (the height and base must be perpendicular - meet at a right angle)
Multiply the base by the height
Divide the answer in step 4 by 2
Write your answer making sure to include units squared

There are times when after dividing the product of the base and height, there will be a remainder. What should you do with this remainder?
Whenever this occurs, the remainder should be treated as a fraction. Therefore, the answer will be a mixed number. Take a look at the example below.
When 15 is divided by 2, there is a remainder of 1. When this remainder is treated as a fraction it becomes 1/2 because the divisor is 2.
