To add a mixed number and a whole number, simply add the whole numbers and keep the fraction.
In this example, after adding, the fractional part of the result is an improper fraction. It must be changed to a mixed number then added to the whole number.
When subtracting a fraction from a whole number, follow these steps:
rename the whole number so it has a denominator that is the same as the denominator in the fraction that you are subtracting. Remember that a fraction in which the numerator and denominator are the same is equal to 1 whole. So, 2 5/5 = 3 (2 +1 = 3).
keep the new whole number and subtract the fractions.
Look at the examples below.
Complete the following:
When subtracting, if the fraction being subtracted is larger than the fraction in the mixed number,:
rename the whole number (3 = 2 7/7).
add the fraction from the renamed whole number to the fraction from the mixed number (7/7 + 1/7 = 8/7. This answer is always an improper fraction.
keep the new whole number.
subtract the fractions 8/7 - 5/7 = 3/7.
