If you want superior air quality control for your cabin with a focus on filtering pet dander and pollen, choose ECOGARD XC35519; if you need heavy-duty engine protection and optimized airflow for a 3.5L V6 Honda Odyssey, choose EPAuto GP042. This decision isn't about which brand is louder or cheaper; it is about matching the right component to your specific vehicle needs. As a pet owner, I know that nothing ruins a drive quite like the smell of allergens circulating through the vents, yet as an engine enthusiast, I also know that dirty air can wreak havoc on internal components over time. You are likely standing at the checkout screen, staring at two very different parts that look deceptively similar in packaging but serve entirely distinct purposes under the hood and inside the car.
The confusion often stems from both products targeting Honda owners, specifically those with larger vehicles like the Odyssey or Accord. However, one is designed to keep your lungs clear while you drive, and the other is built to keep your pistons happy. Confusing these two leads to poor performance, whether that means a stuffy cabin full of dust or an engine struggling to breathe. In this comparison, I am going to cut through the noise and tell you exactly which part belongs in your garage based on the hard facts of their design and intended function.
• ECOGARD XC35519: Its biggest strength is the ability to capture up to 99.5% of fine particles like pet dander and pollution before they enter the cabin; its trade-off is that it is strictly an interior filter and does nothing for engine health.
• EPAuto GP042: Its biggest strength is providing rigid panel protection against dirt and debris to prevent engine wear and improve fuel efficiency; its trade-off is that it is located under the hood and offers zero benefit to the air you breathe inside the car.
• Who each pick is for: Choose the ECOGARD if you prioritize respiratory comfort and cabin cleanliness, especially with pets; choose the EPAuto if your priority is mechanical longevity and engine performance for a 3.5L V6 Odyssey.
The ECOGARD XC35519 is engineered specifically for the environment inside your passenger compartment. When you look at the data, the defining feature is its extensive particle capture capability. It is rated to effectively filter up to 99.5% of dust, pollen, air pollution particles, and crucially for many drivers, pet dander. If you have ever driven with a dog in the backseat only to find fur and dander clinging to the dashboard or swirling in the vents when you turn on the fan, this filter is your solution. It stops these airborne irritants before they reach your face, ensuring that the air you breathe remains clean regardless of what is happening outside the vehicle.
Beyond just trapping particles, this unit is designed to support the overall performance of your vehicle's HVAC system. By maintaining a steady airflow through the heating and cooling components, it helps reduce strain on the blower motor. This is a practical detail that often gets overlooked until the system starts struggling. A clogged or inefficient filter forces the blower to work harder, which can lead to premature wear on electrical components and reduced comfort when you need maximum heat or cooling. The ECOGARD aims to keep that system running smoothly by allowing air to pass through efficiently while still doing its job of cleaning it.

This product fits a wide range of Honda models, including the Accord, CR-V, Civic, Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline, and Passport, as well as several Acura models like the MDX, RDX, and TLX. If you own any of these vehicles, particularly those equipped with the 2.4L or 3.5L engines mentioned in the fitment list, this is the correct choice for your cabin. However, it is important to understand who should skip this purchase. If you are looking to replace an engine air filter, this is not the part you need. It is strictly a cabin filter. Furthermore, if your vehicle's manufacturer recommends a different service interval, you must adhere to that schedule rather than assuming this filter will last forever. It is a high-performance interior guard, not a general-purpose mechanic.
In stark contrast, the EPAuto GP042 is a rugged piece of machinery designed to live under the hood. This is an engine air filter replacement specifically made for the Honda Odyssey from 2011 to 2017, covering all models with the 3.5L V6 engine. Its primary purpose is engine protection. Engines breathe millions of cubic feet of air over their lifespan, and without a proper barrier, dirt, dust, and debris can cause significant wear on internal components. The EPAuto GP042 acts as a shield, filtering out these harmful contaminants to prevent engine wear and extend the life of your powertrain.
The design of this filter emphasizes rigid panel construction. This rigidity is critical because it maintains structural integrity even when subjected to strong suction pressures during operation. A flimsy filter might collapse or allow unfiltered air to bypass the media, defeating the entire purpose of the replacement. By maintaining a rigid structure, the EPAuto ensures that all incoming air passes through the filtration media where it can be properly cleaned. This leads directly to the second major benefit: optimized airflow and fuel efficiency. When an engine receives clean, unrestricted air, it burns fuel more completely. This supports smooth engine performance and can help you achieve better gas mileage compared to a clogged or degraded factory filter.
This part is a direct replacement for the FRAM CA11042 and is made to match the dimensions of the Honda Genuine Part # 17220-RV0-A00. The recommended replacement interval is every 12,000 miles, a standard benchmark for keeping your engine healthy. While the product mentions a companion cabin filter (CP134), the GP042 itself does not clean the air you breathe. If you are a pet owner, you might be tempted to buy this thinking it will stop hair from entering the cabin, but it won't. It is purely for the engine bay. It is the right choice for anyone wanting to protect their investment in the mechanical heart of their Odyssey, but it is the wrong choice for anyone trying to solve allergy issues inside the car.
When you are deciding between these two, the distinction comes down to location and function. You cannot swap them, and using the wrong one provides zero value. Here is how the real-world needs map to the correct part:
• Best for capturing pet dander and pollen → ECOGARD XC35519 (It targets 99.5% of airborne particles).
• Best for preventing engine wear from dirt and debris → EPAuto GP042 (It filters contaminants before they hit internal engine parts).
• Best for improving HVAC blower efficiency → ECOGARD XC35519 (It promotes steady airflow through the heating and cooling system).
• Best for supporting fuel efficiency and combustion → EPAuto GP042 (It maintains clean airflow to the engine for better gas mileage).
• Best for a 3.5L V6 Honda Odyssey engine bay → EPAuto GP042 (Specifically designed for 2011–2017 Odyssey 3.5L models).
• Best for a 2.4L Honda Accord or 1.8L Civic cabin → ECOGARD XC35519 (Fits a wide array of smaller Honda and Acura models).
• Best for reducing strain on blower components → ECOGARD XC35519 (Prevents the blower from working too hard).
• Best for a rigid panel structure to block large debris → EPAuto GP042 (Designed to resist collapse and protect the engine).
If you are torn because you think one part might do both jobs, it will not. They are specialized tools for specialized environments. Buying the EPAuto GP042 for your cabin will leave you breathing in dust, while buying the ECOGARD XC35519 for your engine will leave your pistons exposed to grit. The decision is binary once you identify where the problem lies.
As someone who values both a healthy driving environment and a reliable vehicle, I would buy the ECOGARD XC35519 if my primary concern was the air quality inside the car, which is often the most immediate comfort issue for families and pet owners. The ability to block 99.5% of pet dander and pollen makes it an essential upgrade for anyone sensitive to allergies. However, if I were writing this review for a pure engine performance perspective on a 2011–2017 Odyssey, I would recommend the EPAuto GP042 for its robust protection of the 3.5L V6 engine. For me, the winner depends entirely on the problem you are solving: if you want to stop sneezing, get the ECOGARD; if you want to protect your engine's longevity, get the EPAuto. Both are excellent for their specific roles, but mixing them up is a mistake no buyer should make.
No, the EPAuto GP042 is an engine air filter located under the hood. It protects the engine from dirt and debris but does not filter the air inside the passenger cabin where pet hair circulates.
While it improves airflow through the HVAC system, it does not affect engine fuel efficiency. That is the job of the engine air filter, such as the EPAuto GP042, which ensures the engine breathes clean air for optimal combustion.
No, the ECOGARD XC35519 is a cabin air filter, not an engine air filter. For a 2011 Odyssey 3.5L, you need the EPAuto GP042 to protect the engine, though you may also need a separate cabin filter for the interior.
For the EPAuto GP042, the recommendation is every 12,000 miles to maintain engine protection. For the ECOGARD XC35519, you should replace it according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations or whenever you notice a drop in airflow from your vents.
