Granny Chu's memories of the past came to her like blue flowing water, making us who do not live in Choi Hung Estate feel the impact of the community redevelopment programme on the original community and inevitably sigh.
Back then, there were many vendors in Choi Hung Estate, with lots of delicious food, like beef offal and fish balls. Also, every floor had a open space. The designers hoped residents can use it to connect and hold gatherings, having big meals where everyone would bring tables and chairs together, grab chopsticks and bowls, and start dining together. Before, we knew all residents on our floor. Now the open space is just an empty space.
The changes over 60 years are really significant! All the walls used to be white, and only about forty years ago did they become colorful, turning into rainbow colours. Many neighbors have moved away. Back in the day, our whole family lived together, but now it's just me alone. I am an elderly, living alone. They all got married, and my parents have passed away. I didn't get married, so I stayed here and still live in the same unit.
