Better Together: A Workshop on Shared Challenges and Opportunities for Embodied Conversational Agents (ECA) and Social Robots (SR)

Recent advances in machine learning, natural language processing, embodied conversational agent toolkits, and robot platforms have led to the increased development and adoption of robots and embodied conversational agents in a variety of contexts.

As agents and robots begin to play greater roles in collaborative teams with humans, it will become increasingly essential for researchers and designers of those agents (broadly speaking) to better understand the common technical and theoretical challenges for human-agent collaboration, and how the nature of those agents’ embodiment (i.e. physical or virtual embodiment) impacts the interaction and task outcomes.

The goal of this workshop is to develop a roadmap (instantiated in an NSF "Dear Colleague" letter - see here for an example) for a shared research agenda to address common themes, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration among researchers of social robots and embodied conversational agents.
