By empowering students to select their own learning pathway, Coursera meets the requirements of a learner-centered environment. Without consequences in terms of grades or other types of assessment, students can enrol in courses and choose to either participate deeply or selectively dig into course material. In this way, Coursera serves as an additional teaching aid for students who struggle in a conventional classroom, in a pressure-free atmosphere, with access to support from faculty and students in peer-led forums. 

Coursera is regarded as one of the biggest MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) providers. Partnerships with 140 universities have been developed to deliver more than 1,500 courses in a variety of subjects: engineering, medicine, computer science , social sciences, foreign languages, and humanities. Courses are all delivered free of charge.
