Since there's a logical progression through the four sets of 25 levels, make sure to set up individual user accounts for each kid. The parent and teachers' guide has some excellent information about the learning theory behind the games and goes into detail about what kids do on the different levels. Teachers should read it all so they know what kids are doing. Set kids up by demonstrating what the app does and make sure they understand how to play the games. Set them free to explore on their own, but check in every once in a while to see that they're not stuck or just randomly tapping their way through. Teachers can also do lots to help kids expand their musical literacy beyond the app. Explore the musical themes with simple instruments or even just by clapping hands. Play music and guide kids to listen intentionally by pointing out the different instruments you hear, for example, or picking out the beat from the melody.

Easy Music combines guided practice games and open-ended free play to introduce kids to some musical basics. Start by exploring beat, rhythm, pitch, or melody; a different animal leads each category and guides kids through 25 levels that increase in difficulty. For instance, repeat the whale's song by tapping on the underwater vents to match its pattern of different pitches. Once kids have some practice under their belts, they put it all together in learning to play a familiar song such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on a keyboard, first by tapping on shaded keys in song sections and then by playing the whole song from memory. Or visit the composition area where kids choose from three musical genres in which they combine beats, tap out melodies, and add their own voice. Through a balanced combination of guided practice and open-ended free play, kids can experience and explore both musical foundations and a polished final product. Each game by itself can get repetitive, but since there are four of them, and kids are free to choose what they want to do, it shouldn't be too tedious. The games also rely quite heavily on remembering short sequences, so kids will put their working memory skills to the test. The compose section is a bit more advanced than many other similar functions in other apps: Kids can add their own voice, combine preset backbeats with a tune they tap out themselves, and record it all. On the downside, kids who don't get it may not get enough support, and in some games, kids can pass levels by accident without actually understanding what they're doing. But overall, this is an excellent creative platform for teaching solid music foundations and empowering kids to express themselves through music.

Each game is clearly explained by a helpful dragonfly. A learning guide in the parents' section details the learning theories behind the app's development, demonstrates how to play, and offers learning extensions.

I think this would be an awesome teaching resource. It allow students to explore and learn music in a different form. I think this would be a great resource for pre-k through 2nd if they were able to create their own profile and the teacher could give assignments through the app. I can see a lot of my students wanting to continue to play and learn music outside the classroom with this.

There is so much information in the SQUILT volumes, and you can use as little or as much as you like! Printable charts help you come to know important terms in music: rhythm and instrumentation, dynamics and tempo, and instruments.

I have no background in music education, having been a piano lesson dropout and avoiding any and all music classes thereafter. SQUILT is a terrific tool for a mom like me, who wants to learn about classical music alongside her children. I simply open the lesson and we enjoy it together.

Each lesson includes the name and composer, a brief background of the piece, at least one link to listen to the piece free online (no CDs to buy!), and often other links to related videos: performances of the piece, etc. You could spend as little as ten minutes on a lesson, listening to the selection of music first in complete silence (preferably with eyes closed), then listening again and filling out the included printable SQUILT record sheets.

You can really stretch the lesson over a longer period of time, listening to the piece repeatedly and exploring the extra ideas (complete with printable notebooking pages) that Mary puts right at your fingertips. The lessons are filled with information about specific instruments, musical terms, and classical music itself along with links for further reading, listening, and viewing.

As Charlotte Mason style homeschoolers, we strive to learn about famous composers and grow love for their music. I play classical music when it can be an enriching background, but using the SQUILT technique is like picture study (where you focus on one masterpiece until your child can recall it from memory). Listening to a piece of music and really focusing on it builds a relationship with it that merely having music in the background does not.

One octave songs can be easy enough range-wise, to build new habits, to practice on, to learn new technique. As long as the other criteria listed in the beginning of this article are met - no big jumps, not chromatic. etc. Here's a short list with one-octave songs that are good for practicing.

Super easy piano songs are very simple and the easiest piano songs to play on the Virtual Piano. The notes required to play the song are all within a single octave (12 Keys next to each other). A friend of mine has also made a Windows font (stave plus notes/clefs) to allow mocking up of replica printed music (prior to about 1700), using ABC notation in any package (word, powerpoint, publisher, even visio, or equivalents like openoffice). The font mimics the misalignments on the staves in printed music in that period (since each note was incorporated into a segment of the stave)
