PB4L - POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L ) helps schools to develop a social culture that supports learning and positive behaviour. Children and young people don’t always know how to behave. We need to teach, regularly practice and positively reinforce the behaviours we want to see. Positive behaviour can be learnt. These are some of the principles behind PB4L.
East Gore School is one of several local schools who are running the PB4L programme. Mataura, Longford, Gore High and Blue Mountain College are four local schools participating in PB4L and you will notice that the values that they have decided upon for their school community are very similar to East Gore's values.
Our school values are honesty, responsibility and respect. Each class teacher and their class has taken these values and worked out how these values apply to learning. They have worked out what makes an honest learner, a responsible learner and a respectful learner.
For example, an honest learner tries for their personal best. A respectful learner doesn’t call out. A responsible learner has their tools ready. Each classroom’s interpretation of the values will be different depending on their age level. These learner values are displayed in each classroom. The teachers find that this way of interpreting the school values is a great way to talk about learning with their class.
Currently all teachers are working with their classes to complete a set of matrixes about what our values look like in the classroom. We are looking at what honest, respect and responsibility looks like when we are working with the teacher in the teaching space and also when we are working in groups. Some teachers might call this their class rules or use it to develop a class treaty. We hope this will encourage our awesome East Gore kids to be focussed learners
During interval and lunch time teachers give students token cards with the points value of 5 when they are spotted making a positive choice. When a child receives a token, they take it back to their classroom and put it in their house container. At the end of the week, individual classes count up their house points. Mrs Sanson collates all the classes’ points on a Friday before assembly. During assembly Mrs Sanson will announce the house winner. The winning house will have two draws in the “spin to win” and the other houses will have one draw. For a class with no office referrals they will also get a chance to “spin to win”.
There is ongoing training for PB4L within the Gore District which the PB4L coach and team leader attend. This training keeps the school up to date with latest research and ideas to keep PB4L alive in our school. Regular meetings are held during the term to discuss what is working well in our school and reflections and what we can do differently. Seeking help in the playground.
We are asking children to be follow a simple routine in the playground should they get into difficulties with their peers. It there is a problem we are encouraging children to be responsible and use their W.I.T.S. This means… Make an I statement such as I don’t like it when you call me names, please stop. Walk away if it doesn't stop, Talk to someone about the problem and Seek help. We are encouraging our learners to seek help from the duty teacher. The duty teacher is always out and visible in their florescent vests.
Lately we have been thinking about our assembly routines. You may notice that we are now sitting in classes rather than in our house groups. We are really trying to focus on our value of respect at assembly. Teachers are encouraging and monitoring their classes so they show respect when others are presenting or are being presented with certificates. We are also teaching our learners about being respectful when the National Anthem is being sung. We are encouraging the children to participate by singing and standing until the very end, until the music finishes. Knowing the words and how to be a proud kiwi when our national anthem is being played and sung could serve them well in the future!
We use the theory of Tuakana Teina during our buddy reading programme. Tuakana Teina means the older (Tuakana) working with the younger (teina) to support with our reading. We are trying to encourage reading and hope that there will be reciprocal benefits of enhanced reading skills for both the younger and older child. We are also hoping that the younger child and older child will also form a good relationship that carries over into the playground and other aspects of school life. Our younger children will get to know the older ones in a positive way and our older children will take some responsibility for not only helping the younger child read but also keeping an eye out for their buddy in the playground. We intend to run two sessions each week at 2:40 pm for 15 minutes on a Tuesday and Thursday. If you are a parent/ caregiver you are welcome to join in with your child and be a part of this.
At the end of each term we hold a wristband assembly for the students who do not receive any office referrals for the term. During this assembly, a mystery guest presents each student who qualifies with a wristband. They are invited up on stage to receive the wristband and then add their photo to the value wall in the hall. Parents, Caregivers and Whanau are invited to this special assembly to celebrate the positive choices students are making at our school.
Each term we have treats for students who are making positive choices in our playground and classrooms. There are two treats per term and the activities during the treat can be a wide variety of things. Any student who has no or one office referral in 5 weeks are eligible for the treat. We are excited that majority of our students participate in the treats each term.

We are still hoping to run the slippery slide later this week if the weather conditions are favourable. You may have noticed as you enter the hall the 2014 Hall of Fame. There are photos of children who still attend East Gore and some who have moved on. These photos represent the children who received no office referrals or red codes for the entire year of 2014. This is quite an achievement. We hope to have a lot more photos there at the end of this year for our 2015 hall of fame. In the last week of term, Week 9 we will be having a special wrist band assembly to recognize and celebrate those children who have received no office referrals this term.
Each child in every classroom has a takahe certificate. Each week if your child does not receive an office referral for forgetting to use our values, they will receive a stamp on their certificate. Most teachers have these on display in their classrooms. If you are in your child’s class ask your child to show you how well they are doing on their takahe certificate. These certificates look great at the end of term and are included as a keepsake in your child's learning journal.
This Term we have been focussing on our lunchtime routines. At lunchtime we are encouraging children to eat their lunch quietly with their friends. We have a set of PB4L lunchtime routines which we have taught the children through our values system.
We are encouraging the children to:-
Sit in the defined area (Responsible)
To be in the lunch area within 5 minutes of being released from class (Responsible)
Not bring sports equipment or scooters to the lunch area (Responsible)
Bring their lunch and eat it all (Respectful, Honest, Responsible)
Raise their hand when they are ready to go (Honest, Respectful)
Leave their lunch spot free of rubbish and put it in the bin when released (Respectful, Responsible)
When the duty teachers see children following these routines they are often rewarded with house tokens which they place on the house points board. These tokens go towards the weekly winning house.
As part of our PB4L system we have split the children across the school into four house groups. Finlay ( Green ), McCauley (Blue ), Gordon ( Yellow ) and Longford (Red). Children are placed in a house when they arrive at East Gore School. Children are awarded points for positive choices at lunchtimes, playtimes and assemblies through our house token system. Students also dress up in their house colours during Athletic Sports and Cross Country days at the school. It is great to see so much pride in the students when they are representing their house.
At East Gore School staff try to encourage your children to make the very best choices regarding their behaviour to optimize their learning and so they can enjoy good relationships with others. Most of our wonderful children do this by using our “ Green Code Behaviours.” To encourage Green Code behaviour and to reward it we use a variety of incentives during the school day. Teachers try to use positive language to motivate and acknowledge good choices. Every week that a child receives no Red Code Office Referrals for poor choices or negative behaviour they receive a stamp on their individual Takahe Certificate. After 10 weeks of stamps they receive a blue wrist band, after 20 weeks a red wrist band, after 30 weeks a yellow wrist band and after 40 weeks a special certificate and badge. Takahe certificates are placed in your child’s learning journal. Please chat with your child about their good choices. You may like to acknowledge in some small way when they receive a stamp each week for their wonderful behaviour and great choices.
Students who have forgotten the values at East Gore School are given an office referral to track the student’s behaviours. These office referrals are a record of what value has been broken and when and where it happened.
When a student receives an office referral, the teacher may ask the student to sit out of the playground for a period of time, pick up rubbish around the school or the teacher may just talk to them about the choices they are making.
If the incident is a major offence, the principal will contact the parents regarding the behaviours the student has been displaying. At this time, a plan is decided on to support the student to make more positive choices in the playground.
