The girl’s soccer program at Duluth East High School started in 1991. Since then, the program has developed a reputation for excellence. State tournaments in 1996, 2000 (3rd place), 2001(4th place), and 2002 (3rd place), 2006 and 2010. In addition to Section 7AA runner-ups in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2004. In 2000, 2001, 2002 the hounds were ranked in the top five in the State peaking at #2. Also in 2002, the Hounds qualified for their 3rd consecutive “dome” appearance, finishing third and were ranked in the top 25 in the United States by the NSCAA.
Congratulations to all of the players who have made this program great, your hard work and dedication will forever be part of Duluth East History
Over 75 “Hounds” have gone on to play college soccer, including 13 at the Division I level(Casey Cox – Western Illinois, Danielle Beaudette – Creighton, Jake Cressman – Minnesota, Melissa Nelson – Drake, Lisa Berg – Minnesota, Lisa Trachsel – Minnesota, Ali Zobel – Valparasio, Sarah FitzGerald – Minnesota, Liisa Harkins – Colorado College, Cassy Nelson – Western Michigan, Alex Freeman- Drake, Andrea Hyduke- North Dakota and Michelle Stingle- North Dakota). The Greyhounds have also had two players go on to lead their teams to NCAA National Championships, Laura Neumann at Macalester, and Tara Wegehaupt at Nebraska-Omaha.
“I believe that to fit into a team, no individual can put her needs above those of the team as a whole. She must play her role, the position the coach assigns her…Remember that in soccer, no role is set in stone. A coach may ask you to play a different position or come off the bench for only one-minute, one game, or one tournament. Roles can change every game, either in very small ways or dramatically.”
