Bryce Canyon / Utah

Bryce Canyon is not a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheatres or bowls, carved into the edge of a high plateau. The most famous of these is the Bryce Amphitheatre, which is filled with irregularly eroded spires of rocks called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rock. Hoodoos exist on every continent, but Bryce Canyon has the largest concentration found anywhere on Earth.

We arrived at our accommodation and after checking in we made our way to the canyon rim. What greeted us was something we will never forget...

The view from the rim. The evening sun was just starting to add a warm glow to the rocks

We took a hike down into the canyon...

Pine trees growing up from the canyon floor

Hoodoos everywhere!

The next morning, and waiting for the sun to rise

The canyon was aglow

A precarious perch
