WOLFSBANE (EARTH-7)

Rahne Sinclair, better known as Wolfsbane, is a young Scottish mutant whose faith, traumatic upbringing, and transformation into a werewolf-like creature are inseparably connected. Born as the daughter of a local prostitute and Reverend Craig, she was raised in Ullapool, Scotland, by her father under the strict teachings of his Puritan beliefs. As Rahne grew older, her mutant powers began to manifest, transforming her body and making her increasingly resemble the creature Reverend Craig feared most. Believing her mutation to be a manifestation of sin and temptation, he turned the community against her. Rahne survived through an act of desperate faith, discovering that what her persecutors considered a curse was instead a blessing that allowed her to become the very thing they feared.

Biography

Early Life

Rahne Sinclair was born in Ullapool, Scotland, the daughter of a local prostitute and Reverend Craig, a Purifier sponsored by William Stryker. Her mother died, leaving Rahne orphaned, and she was raised by her father within the local religious community.

As the community's only orphaned child, Rahne grew up under Reverend Craig's supervision. He raised her according to his strict interpretation of Christianity, teaching her to become a grateful and obedient servant of the Lord.

For much of her childhood, Rahne accepted what she was taught. Her faith became an important part of her identity, and she sincerely attempted to live according to the religious principles imposed upon her.

However, as Rahne grew older, something began to change.

The first manifestations of her mutation appeared, gradually transforming her body. Her fingernails became strong like claws, while her physical appearance began developing in ways that Reverend Craig could no longer ignore. Her femininity became increasingly apparent, something that conflicted with the way he had viewed and controlled her throughout her childhood.

Blood also began accompanying her lunar cycles, further frightening the Reverend and reinforcing his belief that something unnatural was happening to the girl.

Rahne's body continued to change until she no longer recognized herself.

To Reverend Craig, the transformation was not a natural mutation. He interpreted it through his religious worldview and began to see the growing presence of what he considered sin within his daughter.

Terrified by what he believed he was witnessing, Reverend Craig began claiming that the devil was Rahne's true father. He declared that, as the daughter of temptation, she would have to be eliminated before her supposed corruption could spread.

Even some of the community's most devout members began questioning the pastor's intentions.

Yet they never questioned what they believed to be the will of the Lord.

Instead, Rahne was treated as an outcast.

The people of the community tied the girl up and carried her into the forest. They intended to abandon her there, separating her from the community they believed she had corrupted.

Faced with what appeared to be certain death, Rahne prayed.

Her prayer was not one of hatred or revenge. It was a desperate prayer of sacrifice, asking for salvation.

Then something happened.

Her transformation became a miracle.

Rahne's mutation fully manifested. Her voice became cavernous and dissonant, her limbs twisted and grew powerful, and her body became covered in black fur. Her face transformed into the beast that the people around her feared.

But rather than allowing the transformation to destroy her, Rahne survived because of it.

She became the very fear that her persecutors had created.

The creature they had condemned became the thing that saved her life.

Rahne eventually came to understand her mutation not as the demonic curse Reverend Craig had claimed it was, but as a blessing from God—something that had awakened within her and saved her from certain death.

A New Faith

Today, Rahne continues to practice her faith despite the fact that the people who taught it to her were among those she believes were furthest from Christ.

Her experiences with Reverend Craig and the Purifiers did not destroy her belief in God. Instead, Rahne came to see her survival as evidence that her faith belonged to something greater than the people who had attempted to use it against her.

She believes that He was the one who saved her, awakening the blessing manifested through her mutation when she needed it most.

Rahne's transformation has therefore become an important part of her identity. What was once used as evidence that she was a sinner became the very power that allowed her to survive. Her wolf-like form, rather than representing the evil Reverend Craig saw in her, became proof that she could overcome the persecution inflicted upon her.

After escaping the circumstances of her childhood, Rahne eventually came under the care of Dr. Moira MacTaggert.

She lived with Dr. MacTaggert on Muir Island during her first years while the necessary adoption papers were being processed. This gave Rahne a new environment away from the community that had condemned her and allowed her to begin building a life beyond Reverend Craig's control.

Moira herself had come from that same community. When she heard about the supposed demon-possessed girl, however, she recognized that Rahne was not a monster in need of punishment.

She realized that Rahne needed help, understanding, and knowledge—things that a place such as the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters could provide.

Rahne's life therefore entered a new chapter. The orphaned girl who had once been treated as a sinner and an outcast could now learn about her mutation in an environment designed to help young mutants understand who they were.

She would eventually become known as Wolfsbane, embracing the abilities that had once been used to condemn her and becoming a mutant capable of transforming into the creature that had once terrified the people of Ullapool.
