The great pirate of the seas, the deadly warrior, and the liberator of chains known as Captain Usopp is actually an orphan from a port town who loves to tell stories and brag.
What is certain is his unerring aim and his keen, observant eye, always ready to hit the mark.
“The pirates are coming!” was all you could ever heard from the boy Usopp, from his early childhood through his late teens—a tireless warning that set the whole town in motion and prompted the watchmen to ring the large warning bells scattered throughout Syrup Village, sounding the curfew and protecting the people from pirates.
The lie, told so many times and in so many different ways, always stirred the town — until it stopped doing so. Suddenly, no one cared about Usopp’s warnings anymore, and when he resumed his routine lies, the citizens would band together to capture him and take him back into his grandmother’s care.
The reason behind this was understood by no one but her. His grandmother was a devout woman from the region who lived in a convent and was unable to raise her grandson, as her daughter, Banchina, also needed care.
The young woman had fallen ill shortly after Usopp’s birth, which prompted the child’s father, Yasopp, to set sail with a band of pirates, searching for a cure or a doctor capable of reversing her condition. However, he never returned. Usopp believed that if his mother heard the local commotion and the warning bells, she would wake from her coma, hoping that the pirates and her husband had returned to the city.
As the boy grew older, the cost of keeping him alive increased, so his grandmother found him a job at the port, asking directly a devout couple who attended her church. The owners of that port lived in a mansion on the outskirts of town and had a daughter Usopp’s age named Kaya. Over the years, Usopp lost his mother, who was very frail due to illness, and his grandmother, who passed away from old age. Because of this, he grew close to Kaya’s family, who felt a certain fascination and pity for the boy.
The two young people also became confidants: Usopp told Kaya about his great adventures with the Usopp Pirates, his companions Ninjin, Tamanegi, and Piiman, the legendary battles, and how he lost a battle that cost him his nostrils—which is why he sports a long wooden nose — all good pirates have one, he believes. Perhaps others don’t understand, but there is great courage in lying. It is through lies that one expresses with the greatest sincerity what one most desires to become reality. That is why Usopp lies so much about being a great warrior: one day, he will become one.
When Usopp saw a group of sailors who needed help reaching port because their boat was in such poor condition, the young man helped them without a second thought.
When they introduced themselves as pirates, Usopp quickly assumed the persona of a very experienced sailor to brag, but what he didn’t know was that the captain of that crew, Monkey D. Luffy, would actually believe in him—not in the lie he had just told, but in his potential—and was ready to invite him to join the Straw Hat Pirates.
