Rogue, born Anna Marie, is a mutant whose life has been shaped by tragedy, survival, and resilience. From a troubled childhood in Mississippi to becoming one of the X-Men’s most powerful and conflicted members, she has carried both the weight of her powers—absorbing the abilities and memories of anyone she touches—and the scars of manipulation and loss. Guided by her adoptive mothers, Mystique and Destiny, Rogue learned early that her gifts marked her for a dangerous future. Over time, she grew from a runaway child into a soldier, a revolutionary, a wife, and ultimately a symbol of survival for mutantkind.
Anna Marie was born in Caldecott County, Mississippi. Orphaned at a young age, she grew up in an orphanage, restless and rebellious, with no clear future in sight. Her life changed when she was adopted by two women—Raven Darkholme (Mystique), a shapeshifter, and Irene Adler (Destiny), a clairvoyant. Anna Marie resisted at first, believing she didn’t belong, but eventually she realized her new mothers were just as unusual as she was.
Destiny saw from the very beginning that the girl was gifted and destined for a greater path. At fourteen, Anna Marie’s powers manifested in tragedy. Sharing her first kiss with Cody Robbins, she accidentally absorbed his memories and life force, leaving him in a coma. Horrified and terrified of herself, she ran away, unsure if her mothers would still accept her. Mystique and Destiny found her again and reassured her—she was theirs, and they had chosen her for who she was, not despite her gifts.
With their guidance, Rogue began to embrace her abilities. Mystique raised her to be a fighter, while Destiny’s foresight gave her glimpses of the battles ahead. One of Rogue’s earliest missions was bold and dangerous: stealing a heavily armed military airship. This mission would throw her directly into conflict with heroes like Major Marvel, testing her strength and loyalty to her adoptive family.
Despite her fierce independence, Rogue’s life was marked by loss and manipulation. Mystique, in her grief after Destiny’s death to the Legacy Virus, crafted dangerous plans that would entangle Rogue’s fate. During this time, Rogue and fellow mutant Gambit (Remy LeBeau) grew close. Their bond deepened into love, marriage, and eventually a shared exile. They sought peace in Valle Soleda, trying to live a normal life away from endless war.
But peace never lasted. Mystique’s machinations nearly destroyed them. She drugged Gambit and abandoned him in the Antarctic desert, hoping he would die, while imprisoning Rogue in the lairs of Mr. Sinister and his Marauders. At the same time, the Brotherhood of Mutants swelled into a cult-like movement, each follower promised glory as a “martyr of mutantkind.” Mystique’s plan was to transform Rogue into the final weapon against humanity, her body becoming an amalgam of mutant powers and memories, a vessel that would outlast all others.
During this crisis, Gambit’s survival was aided by a dead mutant’s wandering psionic essence—Mary Purcell—which haunted him and kept him tethered to life. Through desperation, Gambit used telepathic gifts to reach Rogue, keeping their bond alive even while she was imprisoned.
n the end, Rogue resisted Mystique’s plan. With Gambit’s help and the intervention of the X-Men, she broke free before her body could be entirely consumed as Mystique intended. Though they escaped, both Rogue and Gambit carried deep scars from the ordeal, physical and emotional.
Together, Anna Marie and Remy chose each other once more.
