Sean Cassidy, known as Banshee, is an Irish mutant with a powerful hypersonic voice that allows him to shatter objects, disrupt signals, and even fly using a specialized glider suit. Though initially coerced into working as an agent for the oppressive organization Factor Three, he later defected and became a trusted ally of the X-Men. Over time, Sean transformed from a reckless young man into a teacher and mentor at the Xavier Institute, guiding a new generation of mutants while reconciling with his complex personal history.
Sean Cassidy was born in Ireland into a wealthy family with noble roots tied to Scottish royalty. Indulged and spoiled, he grew up as a carefree partygoer, more interested in living wildly with friends than in responsibility. He also experimented with drugs and mischief, with his mutant sonic powers serving only as a secret party trick that made him the center of attention.
One night, Sean’s life changed dramatically. While out with friends, his hypersonic voice accidentally caused a traffic accident. Police quickly surrounded the group, and unlike previous close calls, Sean was arrested and taken into custody. Instead of being tried normally, he was delivered into the hands of Factor Three, an Interpol-linked branch that used mutants as part of an espionage and enforcement task force.
Factor Three implanted a remote bomb in his chest, ensuring obedience under threat of death. Trained as both an operative and a spy, Sean learned to weaponize his voice: shattering glass, breaking through concrete, interrupting transmissions, or emitting signals detectable by radar. With his glider suit, he became a near-perfect field agent.
Sean’s primary assignment was to infiltrate the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, posing as a student. His mission: gather information and testify against the school, branding it as a training ground for mutant terrorists. However, Sean’s time at the Institute changed him.
Treated with kindness and sincerity, he realized he could not betray Charles Xavier or his students. Eventually, Sean revealed the truth to Professor X, who already suspected his situation. With Xavier’s help, the remote bomb was surgically removed, and Sean was officially welcomed into the X-Men, transforming from an unwilling spy into a valued ally.
Following his induction, Sean balanced roles as both field agent and mentor. He collaborated with Dr. Moira MacTaggert on Muir Island in Scotland, contributing to mutant research and defense. During one mission in Austria, he encountered Maeve Rourke, a woman from his past, and was introduced to Theresa Cassidy, a girl claiming to be his daughter. Maeve had died years earlier, and Theresa’s guardianship had fallen into the hands of Sean’s estranged cousin, Thomas “Black Tom” Cassidy — a mutant terrorist. Fearing for Theresa’s safety, Sean brought her to the only place he knew would protect her: the Xavier Institute.
Recognizing his potential as both a protector and a mentor, Professor X invited Sean to remain at the Institute. There, Banshee took on the role of teacher for the X-Gen second class, guiding young mutants like Illyana Rasputin, Josh Foley, Julian Keller, and Noriko Ashida. Though Sean had only expected to serve in minor roles — even considering work as a janitor — he grew into a respected instructor, shaping the next generation of X-Men.
