X-23 (Weapon-X) is a female mutant engineered as the perfected evolution of the Weapon-X program, designed to be the ultimate living weapon. Created through advanced genetic experimentation, she represents the culmination of years of scientific ambition to refine and weaponize mutation itself.
Her story begins with Professor Ajax, who was responsible for managing an institution known as the Hospice. During his tenure, he began receiving numerous letters that meticulously described the step-by-step process for creating a mutant super-soldier.
These documents introduced a new technique based on chimerism between mutations, aiming to merge and amplify mutant abilities through genetic manipulation. Motivated by these findings, the project was quickly put into motion.
Scientists from multiple previous initiatives, including Project Black Womb, Project Armageddon, and Project Weapon-X, were brought together. To support the experiments, the Kraken network was tasked with acquiring specimens, specifically mutant newborns taken from maternity wards. These children became subjects in studies focused on enhancing mutation potential through direct DNA manipulation. However, the process was marked by repeated failures.
Numerous test subjects, identified as specimens 1 through 22, died during experimentation. These losses led to a pivotal shift in the project under the direction of head scientist Sônia Kinney. Seeking a more controlled and viable approach, she made a radical decision: she used her own womb, implanting it with a recessive X-Gene to cultivate a new version of the Weapon-X subject.
This marked the creation of X-23.
The modifications in this iteration were precise and deliberate. Unlike previous attempts, the adamantium bonding would occur naturally within her bones. Additionally, the subject would be biologically female, based on the hypothesis that instinctive and predatory traits could manifest more efficiently and lethally in a female counterpart.
X-23 was considered the perfect soldier. She was intended to be raised and trained within the system to fully realize her destructive potential.
However, this trajectory was abruptly interrupted by an attack carried out by X-Force, who intervened before her conditioning could be completed. During this intervention, X-23 was rescued and taken away, with the stated intention of bringing her to Professor X for protection and safety. Despite this, it is revealed that the team had ulterior motives for retrieving her.
Following the incident, the letters sent to Professor Ajax were recovered.
These documents not only detailed the Weapon-X process but also contained information about the creation and conception of the original Summers-Grey offspring. All of these communications shared a single, unmistakable signature: Nathaniel Essex.
