Once a decorated soldier turned hitman, Wade Wilson’s life spiraled after a devastating cancer diagnosis. A desperate search for a cure led him into a government experiment that unlocked his mutant gene—granting him powerful regeneration but at the cost of his sanity and humanity.
Wade Wilson served in the U.S. Army Special Forces, where he earned a reputation as a skilled and ruthless operative. After leaving the military, he continued to use his talents as a hitman, traveling the world and taking on high-profile assassinations for money.
During one of these missions, Wade met Vanessa Carlysle, a mutant mercenary. The two developed a deep connection, eventually falling in love. Both decided to abandon their violent lifestyles and start a new life together in Canada, hoping to leave their pasts behind.
Their peace was shattered when Wade was diagnosed with 34 cancerous tumors, a terminal condition that rapidly consumed his body. Desperate for survival, Wade accepted an offer from Department K, which promised to cure him in exchange for his service as an agent of the state.
During the procedures, scientists discovered a dormant X-Gene in Wade’s DNA—one that had been unknowingly suppressing his cancer. The experiments were meant to activate his mutation, but as they intensified, Wade’s condition worsened, and he was transferred to a facility known as the Hospice.
There, under the brutal supervision of Professor Ajax, Wade endured painful experiments designed to fully awaken his mutant abilities. The process eventually triggered the final stage of his mutation, granting him superhuman regeneration—which cured his cancer but left his body scarred and his mind fractured.
Reborn as Deadpool, Wade Wilson became part of the Weapon X Project, joining a secretive unit of mutant assassins. Although his healing factor made him nearly indestructible, the torment he suffered left him unstable, unpredictable, and dangerously horny.
After decades as a fugitive, he was captured in Sydney during a classified operation conducted by the mutant task force X-Force, accused of leading the invasion and massacre at the Weapon X facility.
Wade’s fractured psyche and moral fluidity make him both a dangerous liability and a valuable asset. Official reports describe him as hyperfocused on sex, eroticism, and sadism, though his erratic behavior is often a deflection from the trauma of his past.
After the fall of Genosha’s Mutant Containment Facility during Magneto’s invasion, Dr. Cassandra Nova authorized his transfer to the S.T.R.I.K.E. program, believing that employing him against his own kind—whether mutant or vigilante—was the only effective method of control.
