Biography 

Early Life

James Rhodes excelled academically, driven by discipline and his dream of becoming a pilot for the U.S. Air Force. However, instead of taking that route, he was drafted by the Marines during the Siancong War. His service quickly exposed him to the darkest realities of combat. 

Rhodes suffered one of his most traumatic experiences when he led a failed reconnaissance mission. The mission cost the lives of all his men, and Rhodes himself was captured by the terrorist group Ten Rings. He endured a week of brutal torture before being rescued by his superiors. From then on, Rhodes lived with recurring panic disorder, haunted daily by the failure and its consequences.

Desertion

Broken by war, Rhodes deserted, leaving the barracks behind for nights in luxurious hotels and days numbed by nicotine and caffeine. His life spiraled until one fateful night in a roadside bar, where he encountered a fully armored man in an iron suit—Tony Stark’s Iron Man. The encounter was violent: Iron Man fought through enemies in the bar, even mistaking Rhodes for a threat before realizing who he was. Though Rhodes was left unconscious, he was recognized by military officers as a missing soldier and returned to U.S. command. Despite his struggles, Rhodes’ path soon intersected permanently with Tony Stark.

Partnership with Tony Stark

Tony Stark saw Rhodes’ potential and loyalty, repaying his help by hiring him as head of security for Stark Industries and as his personal bodyguard. Secretly, Rhodes also operated as the armored enforcer War Machine, piloting a heavily weaponized version of Stark’s Iron Man technology. This gave Stark and Rhodes a unique dynamic: Iron Man was a public, flashy superhero, while War Machine worked in the shadows, dealing with threats that required overwhelming firepower or plausible deniability.

Rhodes’ existence as War Machine raised risks Tony could not ignore. With Stark Industries’ technology being copied worldwide, Rhodes represented an outlaw version of Iron Man—harsher, more discreet, less sympathetic. Stark feared that if S.H.I.E.L.D. discovered Iron Man, they would exploit him as a tool of war, stripping away Tony’ autonomy, so when he joined S.H.I.E.L.D. in secret, he was glad for knowing tha James would continue to operate as an Iron Hero, without knowing that his friend received the same deal.
