Greer Nelson, later known as Tigra, is a woman whose life was shaped by grief, desperation, and scientific experimentation that forever altered her destiny. Once an ordinary woman who sacrificed her education and independence for love, she was left broken by tragedy. Her transformation into Tigra — a hybrid of human and feline DNA — awakened her primal instincts, amplifying her speed, senses, and combat ability while unlocking a predatory, animalistic side. Though she struggled with her new identity, Tigra found purpose as a field agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. and later the Secret Avengers, using her powers in the service of justice.
While still in school, Greer Nelson fell in love with William Nelson, a correctional officer. Abandoning her studies, she chose the path of a housewife, devoting herself entirely to him. Their marriage was brief and marred by unresolved personal issues, but its true end came violently: William was murdered by ex-convicts he had once mistreated in jail.
Greer was devastated but unsurprised by the brutality that took his life. With no education, no financial independence, and no career prospects, she was left with nothing after his death.
In her grief, Greer accepted an unlikely opportunity: becoming a test subject for Dr. Joanne Tumolo, her former biology teacher. Tumolo was funded by Malcolm Donalbain, a geneticist obsessed with reviving the DNA of the extinct Denisovan hominids.
His ultimate goal was to create a transgenic human capable of birthing a new Denisovan species. For Greer, this meant being part of a project that could bring her money and recognition, even if it meant sacrificing her humanity. However, Donalbain’s project became increasingly rushed and corrupt, with compromised Denisovan DNA and reckless experimentation. Within days, Greer’s genetic material was fused not only with Denisovan DNA but also with that of a Caspian tiger.
The result was both a curse and a rebirth. Greer was transformed into Tigra — her body enhanced with feline physiology. She gained heightened reflexes, superhuman speed, agility, stealth, and razor-sharp senses. Yet the process also unleashed a suppressed side of her psyche: an apex predator, primal and brutal, with a sharpened libido and a stronger instinct for violence. Her sense of justice grew fiercer, but her predatory nature meant she had to remain under strict supervision. S.H.I.E.L.D. monitored her carefully, aware of the dangers her instincts posed.
Despite these struggles, Tigra’s abilities made her a perfect operative. With her speed, stealth, and hunter’s instincts, she was recruited as a field agent for the Secret Avengers. This gave her both direction and redemption, proving she could wield her animalistic gifts in service of justice rather than lose herself to them.
