shadowoman (earth-7)

Clea was born as the heir to the Dark Dimension, raised between living darkness and the promise of light. Descended from Umar and connected to Dormammu’s vision for the future of her realm, she grew into a ruler constantly divided between freedom and destiny. Though shaped by the endless void of her homeland, Clea ultimately chose neither fear nor submission, becoming a sorceress who sought balance between darkness, light, and the fragile humanity she discovered through Doctor Strange.

biography

Early Life

The Dark Dimension existed as a realm suspended between perception and oblivion, a place understood only by those capable of drifting between waking consciousness and dreams. Within its endless darkness, light was almost nonexistent, and the void was inhabited by shapeless entities whose existence was felt more through presence and touch than through physical form. For millennia, this dimension remained under the rule of Prince Orini’s family, guardians of a kingdom molded by silence, shadows, and ancient mystical forces.

Everything changed when Orini surrendered himself completely to Umar, a mysterious and terrifying sorceress devoted to Dormammu. Her influence consumed him utterly, trapping him within a cold and endless embrace from which he would never awaken. Umar herself was more than a mere ruler of shadows. She acted as an envoy of Dormammu, carrying the will of the being known as the Enlightened One, a force determined to spread chaos and radiant conversion throughout the Dark Dimension. Yet Umar also represented contradiction: while she served Dormammu’s expansion, she also carried the possibility of liberation, because light had the power to reveal everything hidden within the darkness, including the truth of nothingness itself.

From this union, Clea was born. She was destined to inherit the throne of the Dark Dimension and become the key to transforming the realm into another territory fully converted by Dormammu’s influence. However, once Clea’s role as heir had been secured, Dormammu turned against Umar. Fearing that Umar’s personal ambitions could surpass his own vision, he sealed her away in a state of deep invisibility, hidden even within the shadows themselves. Umar remained present, yet unseen, trapped beside her daughter without Clea ever realizing her mother’s existence.

As Clea grew, she was spared Umar’s direct corruption and was raised far from her mother’s destructive influence. Nevertheless, she constantly felt the temptation of Dormammu’s promises. The “gift of vision,” as it was described within the Dark Dimension, offered salvation through acceptance of his light and his ideology. Clea resisted for years, refusing to surrender herself or her kingdom entirely to Dormammu’s control. Instead, she maintained an uneasy peace through negotiations and fragile treaties, though she understood such compromises would never hold forever.

Meanwhile, Umar endured centuries of isolation and resentment. Betrayed by both Dormammu and her own daughter, she searched for ways to escape her unseen prison. Unable to act directly, she began tormenting mortals through dreams and nightmares, invading human minds in search of someone vulnerable enough to free her. Her closest success came through Bruce Banner. Since childhood, Banner had been haunted by terrifying visions of his abusive father appearing within the shadows projected across his bedroom walls. Umar exploited those fears, feeding his recurring nightmares and attempting to twist his suffering into monstrous transformation. However, Bruce Banner’s eventual transformation into the Hulk unexpectedly severed Umar’s connection to him, ending her influence over his dreams permanently.

During these years, Clea also learned more about Earth and humanity through stories carried into the Dark Dimension. One of her greatest warriors, a Sleepwalker who served as one of her elite guards, had once been banished by a Cobweb demon and imprisoned deep within the human mind of a mortal host. By the time Clea learned the full truth, his condition had become irreversible. This tragedy deepened her awareness of Earth’s connection to her realm and strengthened her curiosity toward humanity itself.

the mystic aid of the sorcerer supreme

The turning point of Clea’s life came when a stranger from Earth entered the Dark Dimension: Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme. His arrival immediately caused unrest because he used light to guide himself through the endless darkness, something viewed as both dangerous and unnatural by the inhabitants of the realm. Strange initially sought an alliance, but instead he was arrested upon entering Clea’s kingdom.

Unlike the others, Clea saw something different in him. She granted Strange a second chance after he promised to abandon the rigid certainties he carried from Earth and learn to navigate the darkness through instinct, presence, and trust rather than pure illumination. He accepted the challenge, allowing himself to understand the Dark Dimension on its own terms instead of forcing his world’s logic upon it. Through this bond, Clea finally allowed herself to be truly seen for who she was beyond her title and destiny.

Together, Clea and Strange forged a fragile but transformative alliance. Strange helped her negotiate directly with Dormammu, leading to a binding agreement that reshaped the political balance of the Dark Dimension. Under the terms of the pact, any inhabitants who willingly embraced Dormammu’s “religion of light” would receive his protection and support. However, Dormammu would never gain complete dominion over the free territories that still existed within the Dark Dimension.

Although Dormammu accepted the agreement, he remained deeply displeased by the limitations imposed upon him. Yet the pact carried consequences he could not easily ignore. With the Sorcerer Supreme standing beside Clea, Dormammu could now be challenged and defeated if he violated the terms of their arrangement. For the first time in countless ages, the Dark Dimension was no longer entirely under his uncontested control.

Now ruling as Shadowwoman, Clea stands between worlds. She remains heir and protector of the Dark Dimension while also serving as a defender of Earth against supernatural threats. Torn between shadow and light, freedom and control, she continues to preserve the fragile balance of her realm while resisting the forces that seek to consume it completely.
