Early Life

Marina Maru was born into a lesser but still prestigious branch of the Japanese Imperial House, raised within a world shaped by tradition, discipline, and quiet political expectation. From childhood she lived surrounded by symbols of imperial legacy, lacquered screens painted with cranes, the distant echo of temple bells, and the rigid etiquette of court life. Though destined for ceremonial duties, Marina possessed a restless and analytical mind that found little satisfaction in the ritualized calm of palace life.

Her earliest fascinations were not poetry or diplomacy, but the natural sciences. Court tutors quickly realized that the young princess had an unusual talent for chemistry and biology. Stories tell that while other children practiced calligraphy, Marina secretly conducted primitive experiments in hidden corners of the palace gardens, studying the effects of plant toxins mentioned in ancient texts such as the Bencao Gangmu and obscure Edo-period pharmacology scrolls.

As she grew older, Marina became increasingly disillusioned with the symbolic role expected of her. There she would begin the work that would define her former life.

Toxic Reign

Within Project Caducaeus, Marina Maru was given the freedom to pursue the kind of research she had long envisioned. Her focus centered on experimental pharmacology and toxicology, studying how certain compounds could alter biological resilience, suppress cellular functions, or even reshape the limits of human physiology. To Marina, poison was not merely a weapon; it was a complex instrument capable of both destruction and transformation.

Everything changed when the project acquired a rare and dangerous substance: venom extracted from the mythical Basilisk, recovered after the creature’s confrontation with Wonder Woman. Unlike any known toxin, the compound behaved unpredictably, shifting between stable liquid and volatile gaseous states. Many researchers considered it too unstable to study safely, but Marina believed it held the key to unlocking entirely new biochemical processes.

Determined to understand its properties, she led a series of increasingly complex experiments designed to stabilize and analyze the venom. During one of these high-risk tests, the compound reacted violently within the containment chamber. The resulting chain reaction released a lethal atmospheric toxin that spread throughout the facility, killing every scientist present. When the emergency teams arrived, they expected to find nothing but a contaminated ruin.

Instead, they found Marina alive.

The exposure had permanently altered her physiology. The Basilisk compound had fused with her body in ways that conventional science could not explain, allowing her to survive the toxin that had killed everyone else. The disaster that ended Project Caducaeus also marked the end of Marina Maru’s life as a scientist. From that moment forward, the survivor of the Caducaeus catastrophe would adopt a new identity.
