Ares (Mars), depending on where you have heard of this ancient god of war, now survives through the worship of cults and sects scattered across the planet. His will and desires are still fulfilled, though only faintly, weakened by the decline of the old Greek Mythology and the small number of those who still believe in him.
Even so, Ares continues to manipulate and ignite conflicts across the world for his own satisfaction, reveling in the art of the battle and death dancing together in an eternal ballroom of violence.
Millenia ago, Greece fell, and the empire, the worship and power of its divine pantheon also disappeared. Over time, the Greek gods became increasingly fragile due to the limited number of devotees. Except for one. Ares continued to be worshipped by most of the mortal world, by powerful men who used war to conquer everything their ancestors now posses.
Desperate for attention, the remaining Greek gods turned to a forgotten group of faithful followers, the Amazons, who now lived as atheists and did not glorify any god.
An agreement was sealed: the pantheon would once again be worshipped on Paradise Island, especially the goddesses. In exchange, they would offer the Queen of the Amazons a pair of daughters as a symbol of this treaty.
Ares was deeply annoyed by this and decided to weave his own battle plan: he kidnapped the first of the children and took her with him. In the future, a Wonder War would approach, in which the Amazon Champion would meet her counterpart and both would battle for the title of Champion of the Goddesses.
YThis is only the first part of Diana's ultimate demise. But Are's machinations continue to spread, from his part in creating the Furies, Wonder Woman's personal Tormentors, to his divine intervention in helping the mortal Veronica Cale achieve her ultimate goal: to resurrect the Gorgon.
