John Stewart, a principled architect from Detroit, rose to become one of Earth’s most respected Green Lanterns. Known for his morality and unshakable sense of authority, he was handpicked by Hal Jordan to join the Corps. His career was marked by both triumphs and devastating failures, the most notable being the destruction of the planet Xanshi. Even after retiring, Stewart remained a trusted and valuable member of the Green Lantern Corps.
John Stewart began his professional life as an architect employed by the Ferris Aircraft Company. He was a reserved man who valued morality above authority—qualities that caught the attention of Hal Jordan. Hal spent months observing Stewart before deciding he was the right choice for recruitment into the Green Lantern Corps, not just as another Lantern, but as someone who could bring something unique to the role.
As Earth’s influence in the galaxy grew, it was classified by the Guardians of the Universe as part of the “Highly Dangerous Sectors,” meaning it required Green Lantern agents with specialized ranks. Stewart became the first to be recruited under this designation.
Five years before being chosen, Stewart was sent to Xanshi, a planet in Sector 1313, where a bomb had been implanted in the planet’s core. The presence of the device triggered natural disasters that drew the Guardians’ attention. A Green Lantern of the Investigator rank was dispatched and deemed the threat “Indifferent,” choosing to withhold Oa’s intervention. The result was catastrophic: the planet imploded, and its population was decimated.
The tragedy weighed heavily on Stewart, leading him to retire from active duty. However, Hal Jordan personally asked him to keep his ring, believing it was always good to have “one more Green Lantern.” Even in retirement, Stewart remained a respected figure within the Corps, often mentoring younger Lanterns and advising on missions.
John was contacted by the Justice League to be part of the team, as a retired Green Lantern, he could still use his powers to defend Earth. He was willing to decline it, but his colleague, Katma Tui, his ex-partner wgile part of the Green Lantern Corps, said this was the key to make him overcome the past trauma of his last mission as a Green Lantern.
Despite his resignation, John continued to act as Earth’s Green Lantern for ten years. He assisted the Justice League, defended the planet from cosmic threats, and even fought on his own terms. However, by universal law, the unauthorized use of a power ring carried consequences. The Guardians eventually summoned John to Oa to be judged for acting outside Corps jurisdiction.
Before his trial could begin, John was approached by Appa Ali Apsa, a Guardian who had been exiled for mental instability and isolation. Appa was deteriorating psychologically and believed only John could help him resist the influence of the other Guardians.
Desperate and unraveling, Appa merged his mind fully with John’s, granting him total access to—and eventually control of—an ancient Guardian project: the Mosaic World.
In a final act of clarity, Appa Ali Apsa sacrificed himself to ensure John would understand the magnitude of what was coming.
The Guardians, upon arriving, realized the situation was far beyond salvage. John had already formed a bond with the Mosaic World—a pocket universe composed of countless alien cities, cultures, and environments forcibly stitched together into a single realm.
This patchwork world was never meant to be activated; it was a long-abandoned plan intended to explore new routes to achieve universal peace. Now that it existed, it posed limitless potential—and limitless danger—if left uncontrolled.
Recognizing that only John could stabilize the system, the Guardians reinstated him as a Green Lantern. He became the first Green Lantern of the Mosaic World, responsible for maintaining order among wildly incompatible civilizations.
To support him, the Guardians assigned Katma Tui, the Corps’ most loyal agent—and John’s former lover. Their reunion rekindled old complexities but also restored some of John’s confidence. John formed his own sub-troop, dedicated solely to Mosaic operations, and accepted his new role with renewed resolve.
Upon entering the heart of the Mosaic World, John uncovered a shocking truth: the central dwelling was New Evergreen City, a place pulled directly from Earth—specifically from John’s own memories.
Whether intentionally or by cosmic accident, his past had become embedded in the world he now governed.
Things were about to become far more complicated.
