She never had an identity of her own, so she stole one.
From villain to villain, role to role, she searched for something that felt real. But it wasn’t until she found madness, chaos, and a smile carved into someone else’s legacy, that she finally felt complete.
Duela Dent never truly had a fixed identity. Long before becoming known as Harlequin, she moved through Gotham’s underworld as a shifting reflection of others, adopting personas tied to established criminals in a desperate attempt to belong somewhere.
She worked under figures such as the Clock King, The Cluemaster, Music Meister, and King Tut, taking on roles inspired by each of them. Yet, in every case, the outcome was the same. The illusion would collapse. Whether due to poor payment, lack of recognition, or, most importantly, the absence of any genuine emotional connection, Duela would abandon them.
Obsessed with what she interpreted as the “Quinzel Method,” the psychological unraveling and rebirth of identity, Duela saw something she had never found before: freedom through chaos. To her, Harley was not just a criminal, but proof that a person could destroy who they were and become something entirely new.
Accepting that she had no true identity of her own, she embraced the idea of becoming a copy, a constructed persona shaped entirely by influence. In doing so, she took on the mantle of a copycat Harlequin, redefining herself not as Duela Dent, but as something intentionally fragmented.
As Harlequin, Duela became a copycat killer, often being recruited by other villains as a partner or assistant. Her unpredictability and willingness to fully commit to whatever role she adopted made her both valuable and unstable. However, her need for validation never disappeared.
During a major incident in Blüdhaven, Duela attempted to contaminate the city’s water reservoir with a variation of Joker toxin, intending to spread uncontrollable laughter and chaos across the population. The act was not just destruction, but a statement, an attempt to cement her identity through scale and recognition.
Nightwing intervened before she could complete the plan.
Their confrontation at the reservoir ended with her defeat and capture, leading to her incarceration at Bludhaven State Penitentiary. Even behind bars, however, Duela’s need for identity and recognition persisted.
While imprisoned, she formed a temporary alliance with the Double Dare. The partnership, much like her past affiliations, was built on convenience rather than trust. In the end, true to her nature, Duela turned on them, killing both in exchange for recognition from Tarantula, seeing the act as a way to elevate her own status.
