The Early Modern Migration Reading Group (EMMRG) is a monthly reading group in which we will discuss the frequently overlooked and undertheorised topic of migration and mobilities in the early modern (c. 1500-1800) world. While we are organised around a historical perspective, this reading group aims to take on an interdisciplinary approach, and will include readings from other relevant scholarships, such as migration and mobility studies. Additionally, although focused on early modernity, this reading group will seek to compare early modern migration to migration in other periods of history, including contemporary migration.

This is a guided reading group and at each meeting we will read and discuss a selection of readings organised around a particular theme or area of migration history (e.g. race and migration, migration law and policy). We welcome participant involvement and feedback in the planning process, and are eager to hear participant ideas on potential readings or themes. This reading group is organised by students at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, and York through the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities (WRoCAH) network, but is open to anyone with an interest in early modern migration. It is particularly geared towards post-graduate researchers (PGRs) and early career researchers (ECRs), but is open to all.
