There were two regiments called the 31st Infantry Regiment. Both organized about the same time and both were commanded by a Colonel Bradford. The East Tennessee Regiment commanded by Colonel W.M. Bradford was finally officially designated as the 39th, but the Official Records for the first two years was called the 31st.
The 39th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 31st (W.M. Bradford’s) Regiment was organized in March 1862. It’s members were from the counties of Sevier, Blount, Jefferson, Hawkins, McMinn, Greene and Monroe.
Here are a few names of men from Hawkins County, Tennessee who served the Confederate Army in Company G, taken prisoners and surrendered in Vicksburg , Mississippi on July 4, 1863.

Isaac (Ike) Clark was born on March 10, 1832, in North Carolina to William Clark and Elizabeth "Betsy" Sellers. He married Ann Crawford, daughter of John Crawford and Martha Ann Walker.
Ann died on March 2, 1901. After Ann's passing, Ike married Lucinda Tucker. He passed away on March 13, 1915. Ike and Ann are buried in the Crawford Cemetery, Sullivan County, TN.
Thomas Jefferson "TJ" and Margaret E. Bernard
TJ Bernard was born on January 15, 1854 and passed away on June 9, 1922. He married Margaret E. Morelock. Margaret was born September 14 , 1857 and died March 19, 1932. Both TJ and Margaret are buried in the Morrison Cemetery, in Hawkins County, TN.

Will of John Crawford, Deceased
I, John Crawford Sr. of the county of Sullivan, State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and disposing memory do hereby make and publish this my last will and testament.
I will first that after all my just debts and funeral expenses are paid, I will and bequeath to my son John Crawford a part of my farm where he now lives on, to have the same during his natural life or as long as he may live on said land. Then after his death or departure from said land, then I will that the said land with all the improvements to my daughter Anna Clark and her children that she has by her husband Isaac Clark.
I will and bequeath to my son Thomas Crawford a part of my farm known as the Clark farm to the lane between said Clark farm and the field known as the Ned Crawford field, to include the field that he enclosed this spring and to have enough of my farm South of said Clark farm to make his support on during his natural life as long as he may live. Said land then to go to my daughter Anna Clark wife of Isaac Clark and his children that she has by said husband Isaac Clark with all the improvements of said land.
I will and bequeath to my son William Crawford (deceased) one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my son Edward Crawford (deceased) one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my son Martin Crawford one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my son Samuel Crawford one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my daughter Catherine Hall, formerly Catherine Crawford one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Hall, formerly Elizabeth Crawford one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my daughter Jane Crawford one dollar.
I will and bequeath to my daughter Anna Clark, formerly Anna Crawford all the balances of my land that is not willed with all of my personal property description, during her natural life and then to go to her children that she has by her present husband Isaac Clark.
Lastly, I will that Noble Carr be appointed executioner of this my last will and testament this 27 day of August 1872.

Dated 3rd day of April 1843
Then it is granted by the State of Tennessee unto the said John Crawford and his heirs, a certain Tract of land containing Five Hundred Acres, lying in the County aforesaid.
On the South side of Holston River on the waters of Walker’s Fork of Horse Creek.
Beginning at a gum beech and ? on a small ridge, corner to Martin Crawford. Then with his line N forty-half West, fifty four poles to a hickory and dogwood Thomas Murrells corner. Then with his line South thirteen East seventy-four poles to a hickory and white oak on a hillside. Then with his line South forty West eighty-five poles to a stake, two poles from said Crawford’s old line. Then South ninety one poles to a beech on said Murrell’s line. Then with his line East eighty poles to a stake. Then South two hundred and fifty eight poles to a stake. Then West four hundred poles to a stake. Then North one hundred and forty poles to said Crawford’s old corner stake. Then with his line North eighty four East three hundred and twenty two poles to his old corner stake. Then with his old line North two hundred and seventy four poles to the beginning.
Surveyed 12th March 1844 with the appurtenances to have and to hold the said Tract or parcel of land with it’s appurtenances, to the said John Crawford and his heirs forever. In witness whereof James C. Jones Governor of the State of Tennessee, has hereunto set his hand and caused the Great Seal of the State to be affixed at Nashville on the 22nd day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four and of American Independence the sixty ninth.

Harold Morelock
Harold Morelock was born on January 16, 1922 in Hawkins County, TN to Francis Marion "Bud" and Onida Mae Morelock. Harold served in World War II where he was awarded the Silver Star. He died on June 10. 1947. He is buried in the Lower Beech Creek Cemetery in Hawkins County, TN.

Mona was married to Wayne Light. She passed away on September 20, 1995 at the age of 99. She is buried in the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hawkins County, TN.

Herman Luther Mullins
Herman Luther Mullins was born on July 15, 1900 to Loranzy Mullins and Martha Alice Morrison. Herman married Lydia Morelock. Lydia was born on April 9, 1913 to John Harvey and Mary Ellen "Ellie" Morelock. Herm passed away on April 4, 1987; Lydia died on February 16, 2008. Both are buried in the Mullins Cemetery, Sullivan County, TN. Many have said that Herm had the sweetest soul.

John Harvey Morelock was born on August 21, 1858 to Jacob Morelock and Hannah Light. He married Mary Ellen "Ellie" Morelock on August 15, 1890. Mary Ellen was born on November 17, 1872 to Samual Dick Morelock and Sarah Sallie Light. John Harvey died on October 20, 1948. Mary Ellen passed away on October 24, 1958. They are buried together in the Morrison Cemetery, Hawkins County, TN.

Mrs. Mary Morelock
Fall Branch- Mrs. Mary Ellen Morelock, 86, died at her home in the Beech Creek section (Rogersville, Route 6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday after a short illness.
Survivors include three daughters, Misses Oneida and Lydia Morelock, Beech Creek and Miss Liddie Morelock, Kingsport; and two sons, Mark and Bert Morelock, Beech Creek.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Beech Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Claude Shipley will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Orbin Rhoten, Gus Rhoten, Willard Head, Kermit Morrison, Carter Harris, Homer Light and Rube Morelock.
The body is at the residence. Fall Branch Funeral Home is in charge.

John H. Morelock
John Harvey Morelock, 90, died at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Kingsport hospital after a week's illness. His home was in the Beech Creek section of Hawkins County, Route 6, Rogersville.
He had spent most of his life in that section. He was a retired farmer and was among the oldest citizens of Hawkins County.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Ellen Morelock, of Rogersville, and the following children: Mrs. Marion Morelock, Miss Liddie Morelock, Miss Lydia Morelock, of Rogersville, Mark Morelock, Bert Morelock, all of Rogersville; a brother, Jake Morelock, Fall Branch; a sister, Mrs. Dan Light, Greeneville, Route 12; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beech Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Morelock in charge. Burial will be in Beech Creek cemetery.
Pallbearers will be selected from friends. Fall Branch Funeral Home is in charge.

Roy Earl Light
Roy Earl Light was born on December 18, 1922 to Daniel Carter and Dellie Mae Light.
He served the United States Army as a Private First Class, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division.
He died on October 23, 1944 in Firenze, Italy at the age of 21 and is buried in Plot F, Row 2, Grave 9 in the Florence American Cemetery, Florence, Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Elmina "Toots" Morelock Morrison
Elmina "Toots" Morelock was born on October 21, 1924 to Francis Marion "Bud" and Onida Mae Morelock. Toots married Kermit Morrison.
Kermit was born on July 24, 1930 to Berton Morrison and Atta Dykes and died on October 16, 1992.
Toots passed away on October 1, 2004.
Both Toots and Kermit are buried in the Oak Glen Cemetery, Washington County, TN.

David Nelson 'Tobe" Crawford was born on August 22, 1903 to David Nelson "Red Dave" Crawford and Sylvia "Sibbie" Cordelia Light. Tobe married Bonnie Lee Patterson in 1925 and together they had 13 children (12 daughters and 1 son). Tobe passed away April 20, 1964.
Bonnie Lee Patterson was born on August 11, 1909 to Sam Pettibone Patterson and Minnie Emily Bernard. She died on June 23, 1982.
Both Bonnie and Tobe are buried in the Light Cemetery, Sullivan County, TN.

David Nelson (Tobe) Crawford, 60, Route 5, Kingsport, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at his home after a long illness.
A native of Sullivan County, he was a member of the Gospel Mission Church. He was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie, of Kingsport; one son, Ross Crawford of Kingsport; 12 daughters, Mrs. Edna Light, Mrs. Mae Morelock, Mrs. Lora Morelock, Mrs. Hazel Bragg, Mrs. Ruth Wallen, Mrs. Thelma Whetsel, Darlene Morelock, and Faye, Opal, Linda, Kathy and Sue Crawford, all of Kingsport; two sisters, Mrs. Melva Byington and Mrs. Tressie Jones of Fall Branch; five brothers, Arthur Crawford, Toy Crawford and Byrd Crawford, of Kingsport; Morgan Crawford of Rogersville and Frank Crawford of Chuckey.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Soloman's Temple Baptist Church by Rev. Orville Dolan, Rev. Lloyd Light and Rev.
Clyde Griffin. Burial will be in the Light Cemetery. The body will be removed from the Fall Branch Funeral home to the residence at 6 p.m. Friday.
Sam Pettibone and Minnie Emily Patterson
Sam Pettibone Patterson was born on March 11, 1884 to John Washington Patterson and Mary Esia Bell Crawford. He married Minnie Emily Bernard on September 7, 1907 and together they had 12 children. Sam passed away on December 8, 1974 in Greeneville, TN.
Minnie Emily Bernard was born on May 6, 1888 to Thomas Jefferson "TJ" Bernard and Margaret Ellen Morelock. She died on March 31, 1969 in Greeneville, TN.
They are buried together in the Light Cemetery, Sullivan County, TN.
