Pity is a sympathetic sorrow evoked by the suffering of others. The word is comparable to compassion, condolence, or empathy. It derives from the Latin pietas (etymon also of piety). Self-pity is pity directed towards oneself.

Two different kinds of pity can be distinguished, "benevolent pity" and "contemptuous pity".[1] In the latter, through insincere, pejorative usage, pity connotes feelings of superiority, condescension, or contempt.[2]

In the West, the religious concept of pity was reinforced after acceptance of Judeo-Christian concepts of God pitying all humanity, as found initially in the Jewish tradition: "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him" (Psalms 103:13). The Hebrew word hesed translated in the Septuagint as eleos carries the meaning roughly equivalent to pity in the sense of compassion, mercy, and loving-kindness.[6]

Aristotle in his Rhetoric argued that before a person can feel pity for another human, the person must first have experienced suffering of a similar type, and the person must also be somewhat distanced or removed from the sufferer.[8][9] He defines pity as follows: "Let pity, then, be a kind of pain in the case of an apparent destructive or painful harm of one not deserving to encounter it, which one might expect oneself, or one of one's own, to suffer, and this when it seems near".[9] Aristotle also pointed out that "people pity their acquaintances, provided that they are not exceedingly close in kinship; for concerning these they are disposed as they are concerning themselves", arguing further that in order to feel pity, a person must believe that the person who is suffering does not deserve their fate.[9] Developing a traditional Greek view in his work on poetry, Aristotle also defines tragedy as a kind of imitative poetry that provokes pity and fear.[10]

David Hume in his Treatise of Human Nature argued that "pity is concern for... the misery of others without any friendship... to occasion this concern."[11] He continues that pity "is derived from the imagination."[11] When one observes a person in misfortune, the observer initially imagines his sorrow, even though they may not feel the same. While "we blush for the conduct of those, who behave themselves foolishly before us; and that though they show no sense of shame, nor seem in the least conscious of their folly," Hume argues "that he is the more worthy of compassion the less sensible he is of his miserable condition."[11]

Jean-Jacques Rousseau had the following opinion of pity as opposed to love for others: .mw-parser-output .templatequote{overflow:hidden;margin:1em 0;padding:0 40px}.mw-parser-output .templatequote .templatequotecite{line-height:1.5em;text-align:left;padding-left:1.6em;margin-top:0}

It is therefore certain that pity is a natural sentiment, which, by moderating in every individual the activity of self-love, contributes to the mutual preservation of the whole species. It is this pity which hurries us without reflection to the assistance of those we see in distress; it is this pity which, in a state of nature, stands for laws, for manners, for virtue, with this advantage, that no one is tempted to disobey her sweet and gentle voice: it is this pity which will always hinder a robust savage from plundering a feeble child, or infirm old man, of the subsistence they have acquired with pain and difficulty, if he has but the least prospect of providing for himself by any other means: it is this pity which, instead of that sublime maxim of argumentative justice, Do to others as you would have others do to you, inspires all men with that other maxim of natural goodness a great deal less perfect, but perhaps more useful, Consult your own happiness with as little prejudice as you can to that of others."[12]

Nietzsche pointed out that since all people to some degree value self-esteem and self-worth, pity can negatively affect any situation. Nietzsche considered his own sensitivity to pity a lifelong weakness;[13] and condemned what he called "Schopenhauer's morality of pity... pity negates life".[14]

"A consequential study that breaks new ground. . . . Scott argues that the liberal view that African Americans go through life with a damaged psyche, and the conservative disdain toward people of color, have served to subject blacks to a dead-end cycle of pity and contempt."--Choice

Lawyer: The expression that people adopt when they feel pity for someone is an expression that is hard for them to replicate, if you ask them to. They usually flutter their eyelids, lower their head, and say: I don't know what to say, courage, patience or something like that.

Previous research has demonstrated that pity may have a positive influence on public perceptions of individuals with a mental illness but has not adequately addressed the potential negative impacts of pity perceptions. Seventy-five research participants with serious mental illness completed measures of pity, public stigma, shame, hopelessness, personal empowerment, self-esteem, depression, and quality of life at baseline. Measures of hopelessness, personal empowerment, self-esteem, and depression were repeated six months later. Bivariate correlations found significant associations between pity and "other" effects of stigma including dangerousness, fear, segregation, avoidance and perceived stigma. Baseline pity was significantly correlated with self-effects of stigma such as shame, hopelessness, lower empowerment, lower self-esteem, depression, and decreased quality of life. At six-month follow-up, baseline pity was still associated with increased hopelessness and depression along with decreased empowerment and self-esteem. Anger, avoidance, perceived stigma, shame, and self-esteem were significantly related to pity in multiple linear regressions. Outcomes of path analyses suggest that the significant positive relationship between pity at baseline and depression at six-month follow-up was mediated by self-esteem and hopelessness. Individuals who view mental illness with pity experience negative self- and other-effects of stigma. These effects persist 6-months later. These findings have important implications for stigma-reducing advertising programs.

This is the crucial point. Self pity will destroy you, not the people whom you might feel rightly or wrongly are attacking you. BT's complaints department will not care a hoot, and nor will the train you've just missed.

Note: the Oxford English Dictionary does not define pity with such derogatory sentiments. Rather it defines it as such: The disposition to mercy or compassion; clemency, mercy, mildness, tenderness. Tenderness and concern aroused by the suffering, distress, or misfortune of another, and prompting a desire for its relief; compassion, sympathy. (source: Oxford English Dictionary)

Helpful. Thanks! It is a true pity that Omni Group has chosen to develop elaborate automation, then just simply ignore user questions about how to use it. I have my own outstanding question (how to use Handler in JS to apply conditional formatting). Posted on this forum, Slack, even Twitter. Many, many weeks now and just nobody home. Real shame. Anyway, many thanks for this example. @kcase @Sal

Hey so i just opened my mega bundle golden packs and got a golden legendary, but no signature cards on my 10 golden packs. So i searched and it said that signature cards have a pity timer of 14 packs, then i opened 4 more golden packs ang got nothing but rares and commons. Does the signature cards share the pity timer with the golden legendaries?

The reason we might confuse the two is because we probably have more experience seeing people feel sorry for themselves than seeing people practice compassion towards themselves. So when we think about turning towards ourselves, instead of away, when we feel pain, the first thing that comes to mind is a pity party.

Owen wraps up her remarks by sharing some advice she heard from a previous manager of her own: "I had an old boss who said to me one time, 'You can visit pity city, but you can't live there.' So, people, leave pity city. Let's get it done," she says.

Take the gas attendant who's used to five-second exchanges. For me, the "F" in "fill her up" is 20 seconds and the "R" in "regular" another 20 more. I can see his expression change from confusion to panic to pity. Still, he just rolls with it, fills my tank and sends me on my way.

So, the next time you encounter someone different than you, rather than giving them an eye of pity, give them a big ole fist bump. The more characters and harmless differences in our cast on Earth, the better.

You can't see it anywhere, but it has been proven by a large statistical samples that you will always get a legendary upon opening 40th pack after your last opened legendary in the worst case scenario. It is every twentieth pack on average. Just keep in mind that each set has its own pity timer which means if you open 20 packs from KoFT and 20 from KaC you are not garanteed a legendary! HTH

There are also a pity timer for epics, which is a guaranteed epic in 10 packs per expansion. Here is some info on it. _information_on_the_pity_timer/

I count my packs between legendaries and epics. I can't personally say anything about the golden pity timers because I don't count my packs for those, so I don't personally know how accurate those are, but I believe it. I can honestly say that I definitely never opened a legendary or epic after 40 or 10 packs respectively since I started counting.

1. There IS a span of packs called pity timer for every expansion.

2. In expansion you never opened a pack from yet, you have a chance to get legendary in first 1-10 packs.

3. Then you got span of 1-40 packs for the next legendary. Every time you open a legendary, this span resets for 40 packs. (If someone opened legendary in two or more consecutive packs, then this person is SO DAMN LUCKY and got the span reset twice or more times.)

4. To keep records for your packs I recommend pitytracker.com.
