Task 2 - Multimodal analysis and irony
Make sure you have Elan installed - https://archive.mpi.nl/tla/elan
Make sure you have your video for irony coding on your hard drive
Instructions for report
Step 1 - find a video of a stand up comedian who uses irony and who facial expressions are clear
Step 2 - download the video and load it in ELAN
Step 3 - itemise 2 or 3 instances of irony
Step 4 - add variables (tiers): 1 "tier" for text and other "tiers" for whatever other dimensions you believe are needed to capture the indicators of irony in the performance (as we did in class). Espcially important are prosodic and facial cues.
Step 5 - annotate the instances itemised
Step 6 - Write a short report (1-2 paragraphs) explaining how you think the comedian indicated that he or she was being ironic. Refer to the prosodic patterns and facial gestures observed.
Step 7 - send ELAN files zipped and report to studentwork.glynnp8@gmail.com before 10 May 2026
