Paracanoe in Western Australia

Para-canoe made its first appearance at the Paralympic Games at the 2016 Rio Games.

Para-canoe is open to athletes with a physical impairment and races are contested by two types of boat, kayak (K) and va’a (V). Races are individual events and are over a distance of 200 metres.

Mens:

K-1 & V1 200 Metre (KL1)

K-1 & V1 200 Metre (KL2)

K-1 & V1 200 Metre (KL3)

Womens:

K-1 & V-1 200 Metre (KL1)

K-1 & V-1 200 Metre (KL2)

K-1 & V-1 200 Metre (KL3)

Para-canoe is open to athletes with a physical impairment. Athletes are required to submit medical reports and meet the minimum impairment criteria in order to compete. Eligibility is determined by trained Classifiers.

There are currently two streams of Paracanoe in WA.

Paracanoe development operates out of Ascot Kayak Club on Saturday mornings.This is open to everyone and anyone that would like to learn how to paddle. All equipment is provided and all you need to bring is yourself and something to get wet in. Send an email to dobrien@wais.org.au to get involved.

The Western Australian high performance paracanoe squad is run out of Bayswater Paddlesports Club to align with the able bodied program. These paddlers are on the water 5-7 times a week and also participate in strength and conditioning, cross training and individual wellness programs.

What are we looking for?

Paracanoe is targeted to those with lower limb impairments. Classifiable impairments are:

Limb deficiency: Amputation from trauma, illness or limb deficiency from birth (dysmelia)

Impaired muscle power: Spinal cord injury, spina bifida, transverse myelitis, sacral agenesis, spinal tumours, erbs palsy, muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome

Impaired passive range of movement: Arthrogryposis, joint fusions, contracture resulting from chronic joint immobilisation or trauma affecting a joint
