The goal of Dutch is to end the game with the lowest total score from the cards in your hand.
Use a standard 52-card deck.
Each player is dealt 4 cards face down. Players may not look at their cards initially.
The remaining deck is placed face down in the center.
When all cards are dealt, each player may look at any two of their own cards, memorize them, and place them face down again in the same positions.
Play proceeds clockwise. On each turn, the current player does the following:
Draw a card from the deck and look at it privately.
Choose one of the following actions:
Swap: Keep the drawn card and exchange it with one of their face-down cards (without looking at the card being replaced).
Discard: Place the drawn card face-up in the discard pile in the center of the table.
Discard Reactions (Matching Rule):
If a player discards a card, all other players may discard a card of the same value from their hands (suit doesn't matter).
If a player tries to discard a card with a different value, they must draw a penalty card from the deck, place it face-down in their hand without looking, increasing their total cards by one.
When a Jack or Queen is discarded, the discarding player must take a special action:
Jack (11): The player must swap any two face-down cards on the table. These can be from any players’ hands, including their own.
Queen (12): The player must look at any one face-down card on the table, from any player.
There are two ways the game can end:
Auto Dutch (last card):
When a player plays their last card, they must declare “Auto Dutch!”
All other players take one final turn. The game ends after the turn of the player to the right of the one who called Auto Dutch.
Dutch (manual call):
A player may declare “Dutch” on their turn if they believe they have the lowest score.
Their hand becomes locked (no one can swap or view their cards).
All remaining players take one more turn, ending with the player before the one who called Dutch.
After the game ends, players reveal all their cards and add up their points:
Ace = 1 point
2–10 = face value
Jack = 11 points
Queen = 12 points
Red King = 0 points
Black King = 13 points
Dutch/Auto Dutch Scoring Outcome
The player who called Dutch or Auto Dutch is evaluated based on whether they truly had the lowest score:
If their score is the lowest:
They score the sum of their cards' values as normal.
If tied with other players:
They must draw 1 penalty card from the deck for each tie, and add the value of these cards to their score.
If their score is higher than another player:
They must draw 2 penalty cards for each player with a lower score, and add those values to their score.
