Project Rabbit!
Project Rabbit!
Looking For A Rabbit...Spoilers...It Was Not Easy
I searched the Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Vortex for months watching the prices rise and the quantity diminish. Rabbits were available and sold in what felt like minutes. Contacting sellers is like Russian roulette! Sometimes you get a cooperative seller who is actively interested in providing information to sell their car. Other sellers are an enigma, sporadically communicating, while some are just complete a**holes who cannot even answer questions or provide an additional photo before I drive 7 hours to see the car.
To say this process was frustrating was an understatement.
I decided to contact cars that did not sell quickly or were listed for a long period of time. Many of these ads were never updated, while a few provided to be potential leads to find my rabbit.
This Rabbit, listed for a few months, had gone unsold because the rust was not only on the floors, but also had infected the rocker panels. I do not mind a rebuild, but my buddy was ready to lend a hand (and his welding skills) to patch up this rusty Rabbit.
We made the 3 hour trek from Long Island to New Jersey (damn you Cross Bronx) and scooped up this mess of a car.
Acquiring A New Project...Finally!
After 20 Rabbitless years, I have acquired a 1984 Rabbit GTI. My buddy Eddie and I will be lending his VW mechanic skills as we start to restore this classic. Over the next few months, which lead to over a year I documented the build!
After months of welding, swapping an ABA, wiring the car with a complete CE2 harness, and nearly replacing every nut and bolt on the car the Rabbit was once again ready for the road!
