I have just read the really interesting article DSLR Astrophotography Untracked (link) on CN and I need to look into getting the recommended equipment. The remote control is one of the items that I am missing. Are there any recommendations for a Canon 6D Mark II?

I can imagine the smartphone is an option but then it might be blocked for other uses, maybe a dedicated remote control makes sense. I have found one on AliExpress that looks interesting (link) but they do not mention the 6D Mark II; not sure it will work with my camera.

I use the Canon smartphone app and it works ok but it's kind of a PITA because if you close the app to do something else (or let it sleep if it's on low power mode) then you have to go into your wifi settings and reconnect again. You pretty much have to just sit with the app open and watch it while using it. I'm thinking about getting an actual remote shutter.

Does the same remote control (plug) work with the Canon 6D and the Canon 6D Mark II?

I find a lot of products for the 6D but I am not sure if they omitted the 6D Mark II or if it does not work with this newer model.

I have received now my Jintu JT-C3, which looks similar to the Velo ShutterBoss mentioned above and I have managed to get it working BUT I have not figured out how to use the remote control in conjunction with Canon's mirror pre-release function. Not sure if this is even possible... if not, wouldn't that be an issue? The vibrations of the mirror cannot be good for imaging.

If you are looking just for a less expensive option for a remote shutter, get a set of RF602 flash triggers for Canon. US $19 right now. It is a flash trigger and remote, so you get dual use out of it. Range is 100M.

This article will cover the steps necessary to integrate Breeze Booth (DSLR Remote Pro) software with TDO. DSLR Remote Pro allows you to remotely trigger your Canon EOS digital SLR from a Windows PC via USB. By integrating this software into TDO, you can trigger your camera from the Acquire window in TDO. The picture will be sent directly to the Acquire window.

Im using dslr remote pro for windows and my camera is canon eos 700D. When i am using external flash mode, then go to full photo booth mode the shutter speed on my cam led is automatically set to bulb which result for blurry photos. I set my camera to manual mode 1/125 f8 and iso 400.

You need to set the shutter speed via the interface of the Remote Pro application, not directly on your camera. The camera is probably reverting to "Bulb" mode because the application is telling it to do so. The application, rather than the camera, will then provide the timing function. It will be similar to when using a remote cable release with the camera set to "Bulb": pressing the button on the remote for 1/125 second will result in a 1/125 second exposure, pressing the button for 1/2 second will result in a 1/2 second exposure, etc. You probably also need to set aperture and ISO via the application.

With a wired remote most of us are not precise enough to time "Bulb" exposures that are shorter than several seconds accurately enough. Your computer application, however, should be perfectly capable of timing the shutter command precisely enough to use shutter times up to the camera's sync speed when the camera is in "Bulb" mode.

Hello! I have tried two apps on Google Play, DSLR Remote and Camera Remote apps. However, I can't get them to work with my Canon T5i for remote control for shutter / self-timer. This will be amazingly useful if it can work. Can anybody help? Thanks.

You'll need to go into the "Drive" options (that's where you get to choose things like single shot, continuous shooting, 2 second delay timer, 10 second delay timer, etc. and you'll notice that some of the choices have a tiny remote icon. The camera has to be in one of those modes that shows the remote to enable the IR sensor on the camera body.

I'm glad you got it it to work for you, but It shouldn't be limited to working in "Auto" mode. I found It works work in most modes including the Creative modes. Be sure select the "Self-timer: 10sec/ remote" setting. Just keep experimenting and enjoy!

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to remote control your DSLR is by using your smartphone. For instance, this will go easy with your Canon DSLR, which can be controlled by any kind of remote. You may also use this with a Nikon DSLR, but you have to check its compatibility first.

Since manually touching the camera when taking shots is not always possible or practical, it is time to consider getting a remote control for your DSLR. By using a wireless remote, particularly one that is controlled by a smartphone, you can be more flexible with your shooting options. The following are the advantages if you use your phone as a camera remote:

4. Allows you to shoot from a distance. Doing a self-portrait or shooting the wildlife is made easier since a wireless remote will allow you to take a shot even from a distance. This means you can strike a pose without being awkward with your position just to catch up with the timer or guess if you are at your best angle.

4. Get the necessary device and accessories. To enhance the usage of your phone-controlled camera remote, it is best if you check out MIOPS for devices and accessories that can improve its performance.

What I like about dslrBooth are its robust settings and options. The software is a real powerhouse and I can see a dedicated photographer making magic with it. That is, if he or she is willing to invest time learning to use it as it can be quite complex.

Overall dslrBooth is an amazing program for photographers who want to keep it old school. If you have a decent camera, studio light, and a laptop laying around and a wedding or a party coming up, then grabbing a copy of dslrBooth is a no-brainer.

To save power, some cameras switch off automatically if their shutters have not been tripped for a certain period of time. My Nikon D40 shuts off after 15 minutes of no activity. To get around this, my remote control sends a pulse to trip the camera at least every 14 minutes (even if the criteria for sending a legitimate trigger pulse have not been met).

This multi-functional remote works by replicating the IR Command Pulse that Nikon DSLRs respond to. My post on how to replicate this signal can be found here. Once we have the signal, we can replicate it by programming a micro-controller to pulse an IR LED in exactly the same manner.

d) Test Mode: The device can operate in "Test" or in "Pulse" regimes (Through switch connected to headers J25, J26, J27). While in "Test" regime, the micro-controller does not pulse the IR LED (that activates the camera) but instead it blinks a normal red LED. So by putting the remote to "Test" regime, you can make all the settings you need, and confirm by watching the red "Test" LED that the trigger will operate at the right moment. Now you can put the device back to "Pulse" regime and it will now send pulses through the IR LED that operates the camera.
