Aug 2023 - July 2026
Environmental science is one of the least diverse STEM fields, and the goal of this project is to increase the participation in this field, of students from historically marginalized communities, by appealing to their innate desire to address societal inequities. To achieve this goal, we propose an innovation within existing gateway courses (for example, at NC Central University, ENSC 1000: Introduction to Sustainable Planet) by introducing data science for environmental justice (DS4EJ) project-based learning (PBL) modules.
This module has been implemented in the classroom a few times and refined accordingly.
Note: In the above figshare link, in addition to the data, a zip file of the lecture slides, activity sheets and instructor notes can also be downloaded from item #3 in the description.
The grant was terminated before this module could be implemented in the classroom.
