dryeye
TO ALL DRY EYE SUFFERERS
The scientific name for a condition commonly referred to as dry eye is KERATOCONJUNCTIVITUS SICCA (KCS).
The causes of dry eye include: age, environmental conditions, gender, medication, and medical conditions. However, the main factor to be considered is old age. Anyone under the age of 65 years of age who has dry eye can usually cope with the condition by themselves. Past that age , it becomes increasingly difficult to cope with dry eye.
Dry eye is a condition in which the eye does not produce enough tears in order to lubricate the eye.
I suffered from dry eye all of my life and it was only recently that one observant optometrist diagnosed the condition for me. She told me that she had observed scarring of my corneas through the microscope that she was using. At the time, my eyelids felt as though they were made out of sandpaper each time I blinked. Up until that time, I had no idea that I had dry eye and if anyone had told me that I had dry eye I would never have believed them. That is the type of eye condition that it is.
An easy way to diagnose dry eye is to see if your eyes are always red. If they are, then that is a good indication that you suffer from dry eye. If you see someone with constant red eyes alert them to the possibility that they may be suffering from dry eye syndrome.
As stated before, dry eye is a condition in which the eye does not produce enough tears in order to lubricate the eye. The outcome of not producing enough tears leads to the eye becoming dry. Dry eye is a common problem in the elderly and it may become chronic if not treated properly.
Now, what can be done about this condition called dry eye?
The main cause of dry eye is a decrease in the production of tears from the tear gland which is located just above the eye. This decrease in the production of tears occurs gradually as we age because the tear gland is not functioning properly, possibly due to a blockage from or within the tear gland itself or from some other cause. Obviously we cannot have a new tear gland implanted. So this means that there is no cure for dry eye. The only possibility is treatment. Without proper treatment damage to the cornea may result and the eye may not function properly.
You may think that the only possible damage to your eyes that can arise from dry eye is scarring of the cornea. This is not so.
The cornea, the clear, front part of the eye does not have any blood vessels running through it. Without ordinary blood vessels, the cornea must get it`s oxygen supply from some other source which it turns out is directly from the air. The oxygen first dissolves in the tear film and then diffuses throughout the cornea in order to keep it healthy. Equally important, the waste products in the form of carbon dioxide produced by the cornea must be disposed of by diffusing out of the cornea and into the tear film, and then into the atmosphere in the reverse process. Without a proper functioning tear film none of this is possible and the cornea gradually begins to perish.
To find out what is the best treatment for dry eye you will have to see an OPHTHALMOLOGIST or an OPTOMETRIST or a PHARMACIST or wait until next time. I am currently looking into the possibility of developing a new treatment for dry eye. I have been using my treatment on my own eyes for some time now and it seems to be working okay.
Remember that without proper treatment you will wake up in the morning and your eyes will refuse to open and you will feel bleary eyed. With proper treatment you can feel invigorated again and be keen to get out of bed in the morning and remember that if you develop dry eye you will require treatment for it for the rest of your life.
Dry Eye Tips:
Chemical Composition of a Tear Drop:
Water which comes from the lacrimal gland, outer layer of fatty oils which come from the meibomian gland, and mucus.
Danger:
Many ophthalmologists and people regard dry eye syndrome as a joke. Beware, because it is a dangerous eye condition.
Glaucoma sufferers:
Glaucoma sufferers who use anti glaucoma eye drops are particularly prone to dry eye syndrome and should take extra special precautions against this eye condition.
