SPSS in Business Modelling (MSc) Course Outline

Overview

SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) is a statistical tool for data analysis. The primary objective of this course is to provide participants with a basic knowledge of the program in order to be able to use it in a socio-economic context and in the exploration of corporate data.

 

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

Understand the main features of SPSS, Use the SPSS GUI effectively, Perform descriptive analyses with SPSS, Perform common parametric and non-parametric tests, Perform simple regressions and multivariate analyses (factor and cluster)


Proposed Topics

Introduction to SPSS, SPSS Environment: data editor, output viewer, syntax editor, Data view window, SPSS Syntax, Data creation, Importing data, Variable types in SPSS and Defining variables, Creating a Codebook in SPSS

 

Working with Data

Computing Variables –

Recoding (Transforming) Variables: Recoding Categorical String Variables using Automatic Recode - Rank Cases - Sorting Data - Grouping or Splitting Data.

 

Exploring Data

Descriptive Statistics for Continuous Variables,  The Explore procedure, Frequencies Procedure,  Descriptive, Means, Frequencies for Categorical Data

 

Analyzing Data

Inferential Statistics for Association: Pearson Correlation, Chi-square Test of Independence, Inferential Statistics for Comparing Means: One Sample t Test, Paired-Samples T Test, Independent Samples T Test, One-Way ANOVA
