An upper GI endoscopy or EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a procedure to diagnose and treat problems in your upper gastrointestinal tract( esophagus, stomach and first half of duodenum).. A patient may be fully conscious or sedated  during the procedure.This procedure is done using a long, flexible tube called an endoscope.

The tube has a LED light and video camera on one end. The tube is put into your mouth and throat. Then it is slowly pushed through your esophagus and stomach, and into your duodenum. Video images from the tube are seen on a monitor.

Indications of UGI Endoscopy

• Upper abdomen pain

• Dyspepsia

• Reflux Disease

• Bleeding from mouth

• Difficulty in swallowing food

• Chronic diarrhea

• Biopsy of upper GI tract

Therapeutic procedures can be done during  UGI Endoscopy :

• Esophageal variceal banding

• Endoclipping and injection of bleeding lesion

• Polyp removal

• Foreign body removal

• Dilatation of strictures

• Stenting of esophagus and duodenum

• Ryles tube placement

• PEG( Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) tube placement
