Dr. Sajid Saleem is a Computer Scientist and an Artificial Intelligence expert. He received Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan in 2006 and 2009, respectively. He received Ph.D. degree in 2014 from Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robert Sablatnig (Computer Vision Lab, Vienna). His PhD studies was fully funded by the Vienna PhD School of Informatics Scholarship, Austria (2011-2014). His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Image Processing, Computer Vision, Language & Technology, Healthcare, Quality Education and FinTech solutions.
As a part of his MS thesis, he investigated a novel image registration technique to Geo-register aerial images of agriculture land with satellite imagery. His PhD research was focused on the construction of Local Image Descriptors to overcome spectral and non-linear intensity changes between multi-sensor images. During his PhD studies he also worked on a research project, “The Enigma of the Sinaitic Glagolitic Tradition” funded by the Austrian Science Fund to investigate Optical Character Recognition system for the digital preservation and virtual restoration of (damaged) Glagolitic manuscripts (written in 10th-11th/12th century) from St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai, Egypt (traditionally known as Jabal Musa).
He joined National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, Pakistan, as a faculty member in 2016. After joining NUML, the focus of his research has shifted to research and development of resources (digitization / preservation of textural heritage, language corpora, application programming interfaces and deep learning architectures) for Urdu and other regional languages of Pakistan. Currently, he is working on speaker recognition system and also on the integration of Artificial Intelligence in Language & Technology, Healthcare, FinTech and Quality Education, which are priority areas of national relevance and important Sustainable Development Goals set by United Nation to be achieved by the year 2030.
He has more than 16 years of teaching and research experience. He has worked as a faculty member at FAST-National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences, Peshawar, and University of Wah, Wah Cantt. He has published various research articles/papers in highly reputed international conferences and journals. Currently, he is associated with the Computer Science Department of NUML, Rawalpindi as HoD CS. He is an expert of Outcome Based Education (OBE) system and has implemented the OBE system for the BS. Electrical Engineering program of NUML as per Washington Accord / Pakistan Engineering Council guidelines. He has also worked as Manager Research at NUML Center for Multidisciplinary Research from 2021 to 2023.
He is heading Applied Artificial Intelligence Lab at NUML Rawalpindi. The lab offers Final-Year/R&D Projects, MS & PhD theses in Artificial Intelligence, Language & Technology, Image Analysis, Computer Vision, Healthcare, Quality Education and FinTech. The lab is open for research collaboration and joint research projects.
