Blepharitis is inflammation of lid margin.
TYPES
Anterior:
It involves anterior lid margin
Posterior:
It involves posterior lid margin
meibomian gland dysfunction and alteration in meibomian gland secretions
The anterior blepharitis is further divided into
staphylococcal
and Seborrheic. The staphylococcal type is identified by hard crusts and seborrheic type is identified by matting of eye lashes. usually associated with dandruff of scalp.
CLINICAL FEATURES
They cause irritation and tear film disturbance.
Burning,
grittiness (sandy).
mild photophobia
crusting and redness of lid margins
conditions are worse in the morning
Anterior blephritis
hard crusts
Matting of eyelashes
Posterior blepharitis
Excessive meibomian gland secretions
capping of meibomian gland orifices
sequale / complications of blephritis
trichiasis
entropion
madarosis
poliosis
lacrimation
tylosis: thickning of lid margin
Treatment options are
lid hygiene,
warm compresses,
lid massage,
topical antibiotic eye drops and ointment at night
mild steroid eye drops like fluorometholone and
artificial tears.
Using diluted baby shampoo on eye lashes when taking bath
improvement of general health and hygiene
dandruff of scalp is treated with antidandruff shampoo
