OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM
Definition: conjunctival inflammation developing within the first month of life.
Etiology
gonococcus
chlamydia
pneumococcus
herpes simplex virus
Symptoms
discharge within first week
conjunctiva is bright red and swollen
thick pus at eye lid margins
sticking together of eye lids
Signs
lid edema
conjunctiva is congested and chemosed
pus at lid margins
Complications in untreated cases
corneal ulcer
corneal perforation
adherent leucoma
nystagmus in case of corneal opacity
Treatment
antibiotic eye drops
antibiotic ointment
lid hygiene
washing with normal saline
systemic antibiotics or antiviral as is the cause
in case of systemic involvement in co-ordination with pediatrician
Differential diagnosis
congenital NLD block
congenital glaucoma
prophylaxis
aseptic delivery
treatment of any vaginal discharge
use of topical antibiotic immediately after delivery
