There's no question that 2005 has been a year of roots and culture in Jamaica. The honeyed harmonies, social commentary, and soothing pulse of straight-up reggae has ruled for the past 12 months, relegating all but the strongest bashment riddims to the sidelines.

Although traditional sounds are increasingly gaining attention, gems of a more jiggy variety can still be found. Take H20 Records' Hello Moto riddim (7"/JA) for instance. This mid-tempo production is simple as can be, built around a single-handed synth hook and squelchy acid splashes, but tugs hips like a freight train. Vybz Kartel delivers a solid title track, but the perennially underrated Bling Dawg turns in the real goods with "Nutten Nuh Dread", a perfect complement to Wayne Marshall's party-starting singjay version "Taking Me Higher".

Meanwhile, the unstoppable rise of Puerto Rican reggaeton is a clear influence on New Yorker Bobby Konders' latest offering. Reminiscent of the classic Dem Bow riddim pattern, the Bang Bang (Massive B/7"/US) hosts T.O.K.'s "Take It To Dem", a manic pop number that's slick as oil on a puddle, and Kiprich gets his dance on with "Wine'n", but the pick of the crop is Mr Vegas's "Gal Over Gun, an almost-conscious cut about making love, not war.

While last month's hyperspeed thrills came courtesy of Mr Wills' Ice Cube, October sees Andrew Bradford (better known as Buccaneer, a dancehall deejay famous for his signature style of mixing roughneck toasting with interpolations of well-known operas) rolling out the Blue Lagune riddim on his own label (Opera House/7"/JA). Buccaneer's vocal work has always been something of an acquired taste (in other words, not my cup of tea at all), but this production is something else. Bounty Killer's gruff tones on "From Far" play perfectly against the clanging percussion and pizzicato strings, as does Sizzla's spectacular misanthropy on "Don't Diss".

With Kingston, Brooklyn, and Cologne already represented in this column, it's fitting to round off even further afield. Japanese label Bacchanal Records' Indian Summer was one of last year's unexpected hit riddims-- a captivating drum and bass pulse dappled with lilting synths. Now it's been updated in a chunkier remixed version, featuring new voicings from both Kiprich and Spragga Benz. Still, the one you really need is the edit of Sizzla's "For Da Girls", it's as slinky as the original, but with added low-end thrills. With tracks this good coming from such improbable locations you just know Ini Kamoze was right all along-- it really is a "World A Reggae Music". 17dc91bb1f
