If you want the most accurate, immersive audio experience for critical listening and gaming at your desk, choose DROP + Grell OAE1; if you need a secure, lightweight wireless solution that keeps you aware of your surroundings while working out or commuting, choose Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds.
These two devices occupy opposite ends of the personal audio spectrum. One is a wired, open-back headphone engineered by an audiophile legend to replicate the physics of speaker listening, while the other is a featherweight clip-on earbud designed for all-day wear and environmental awareness. The choice isn't about which brand is better, but which form factor serves your specific workflow.
• DROP + Grell OAE1: Delivers a wide, airy soundstage with natural imaging through front-firing drivers and biocellulose diaphragms; the trade-off is its wired nature and lack of portability. Best for home setups and serious listeners who prioritize sound quality over convenience.
• Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds: Offers 30 hours of battery life and a secure, pressure-free fit using memory metal; the trade-off is the absence of noise isolation and a focus on situational awareness rather than deep immersion. Best for active users, commuters, and those who need to stay connected to their environment.
The DROP + Grell OAE1 is not a device for the casual listener scrolling through social media in a noisy coffee shop. This is a tool for the person who sits down at their computer and wants to hear every nuance of a recording, from the breath of a vocalist to the decay of a cymbal. Designed by Axel Grell, a name synonymous with high-end acoustic engineering, these headphones utilize a unique front-firing driver design. Instead of pushing sound directly into the ear canal like traditional headphones, the drivers face forward, mimicking how we naturally hear sound sources in the real world. This geometry, combined with an open-back enclosure, allows air and sound to flow freely, creating what engineers call a "speaker-like presentation."
For someone looking for the best in-ear earbuds for PC gaming or music production, this is a compelling alternative. The open-back design eliminates the "in-your-head" effect common with closed headphones, resulting in a wide soundstage with impressive spatial depth. You can pinpoint exactly where a sound is coming from in a virtual space, which is critical for competitive gaming or mixing audio tracks. The use of biocellulose dynamic drivers further refines this experience, offering controlled bass, detailed mids, and smooth highs across a broad frequency range. The technical specifications show a frequency response that extends well beyond standard hearing limits, suggesting a level of detail that many mass-market headphones simply cannot reproduce.

However, this fidelity comes with significant constraints. The OAE1 is strictly wired, utilizing a 3.5mm jack. There is no Bluetooth, no wireless freedom, and no ability to walk around your house while listening. Furthermore, because they are open-back, they offer zero noise isolation. If you live in a busy household or try to use them in a public library, everyone around you will hear your audio, and you will hear everything else in the room. They weigh 375 grams, which is substantial compared to modern ultra-lightweight earbuds, so comfort during long sessions depends entirely on your tolerance for over-ear clamping force. These headphones are ideal for a dedicated listening chair or a stationary desk setup where the goal is pure sonic accuracy.
In stark contrast, the Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds are built for mobility and safety. They target the user who refuses to be isolated from the world. The core philosophy here is openness; by resting on the outer ear rather than sealing the ear canal, these buds allow ambient sound to pass through naturally. Whether you are running on a city street, walking a dog, or sitting in an open-plan office, you remain fully aware of traffic, colleagues, and surroundings. This makes them an excellent choice for anyone needing a safe, hands-free way to listen without compromising situational awareness.
The physical design is equally innovative. The clips are constructed from aerospace-grade nickel-titanium memory metal, which conforms to the shape of your ear without applying pressure. This means they stay put during vigorous activity without pinching or slipping, even when worn alongside eyeglasses. At just 6.17 grams per bud, they are among the lightest options available, eliminating the fatigue often associated with heavier in-ear monitors. You can wear them for ten minutes or ten hours, and the sensation of weight is negligible. The control scheme also addresses a common pain point in wireless audio: accidental taps. Raycon has included tactile physical push buttons, ensuring that volume changes and track skips happen only when you intend them to, even if you are wearing gloves.
Battery life is another major selling point for the active lifestyle. With 30 hours of total playback time combining the earbuds and the charging case, you are unlikely to run out of power during a typical week. A single charge provides up to 8 hours, and the IPX5 water resistance rating ensures they can handle sweat and rain without issue. However, this versatility comes with compromises. The open design means there is no passive noise cancellation; loud environments will drown out quiet details in the music. Additionally, the audio tuning prioritizes clarity and presence over the deep, rumbling bass that sealed headphones provide. These are not for the person seeking total immersion in a fictional soundscape, but for the person who needs reliable audio while staying engaged with reality.
• Best for Soundstage and Imaging → DROP + Grell OAE1: The front-firing drivers and open-back architecture create a three-dimensional audio field that is unmatched by any closed or in-ear design.
• Best for Battery Life and Portability → Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds: Wireless freedom and a massive 30-hour battery capacity make them the clear winner for all-day use away from a power source.
• Best for Situational Awareness → Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds: The open-ear design lets you hear traffic and conversations while listening to music, a safety feature essential for outdoor activities.
• Best for Critical Listening and Studio Work → DROP + Grell OAE1: The low distortion and precise frequency response make them suitable for professional audio tasks where accuracy is paramount.
• Best for Active Lifestyles → Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds: The memory metal clip and IPX5 rating ensure they stay secure and functional during intense workouts or inclement weather.
• Best for Home/Stationary Use → DROP + Grell OAE1: The wired connection and lack of noise isolation make them impractical for moving around but perfect for a fixed listening position.
• Best for Comfort During Long Sessions → Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds: Weighing less than 7 grams each, they eliminate the pressure points and heat buildup common with over-ear headphones.
• Best for Detailed Music Production → DROP + Grell OAE1: The biocellulose drivers and extended frequency response reveal details in recordings that other headphones might obscure.
I would buy the DROP + Grell OAE1 for my primary desktop setup. As someone who spends hours at the computer, whether gaming or editing content, the ability to have a foldable wireless headset for PC is nice, but the sonic superiority of the OAE1 is non-negotiable for my work. The front-firing design offers a realism that I haven't found elsewhere, making it the definitive choice for anyone seeking the best in-ear earbuds for PC audio experiences that mimic high-end speakers. While the Raycon buds are fantastic for the gym, they simply cannot compete with the fidelity of the OAE1 when the priority is pure sound quality. For a stationary, high-performance audio station, the wired limitation is a worthy trade-off for the immersive experience provided.
While the open-ear design prevents pressure on the ear canal, the clip-on form factor might feel bulky when lying on your side. The 6.17g weight helps, but they are generally better suited for waking activities than sleep due to the physical profile of the clip.
Yes, the DROP + Grell OAE1 features a standard 3.5mm jack, allowing direct connection to most smartphones and computers. However, since they are open-back and wired, they are not ideal for mobile use where background noise and movement are factors.
The Raycon Everyday Clip-On Earbuds offer 30 hours of total battery life with 8 hours per charge, making them ideal for travel. The DROP + Grell OAE1 has no battery as it is a purely wired device, drawing power directly from your audio source.
The open-ear design means ambient noise will enter both the ear and the microphone. While they are great for awareness, they do not offer active noise cancellation, so callers may hear background noise unless you are in a quiet setting.
