On the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, nestled within a quiet fold of the Western Ghats, lies Drongo Nest. Just beyond Kumily and within reach of Thekkady and Munnar, this region of the ‘Highranges’ is known for its mist-covered hills, spice gardens and long-standing ayurvedic traditions.

Spread across an acre of hillside between 980 and 1080 metres above sea level, Drongo Nest is the result of a decade-long transformation. Land once dependent on conventional chemical farming has gradually been restored to a system guided by holistic organic practices and inspired by Masanobu Fukuoka’s philosophy of natural farming.

Sustainability is a daily practice at Drongo Nest. Much of the farm’s infrastructure has been recycled or downcycled. Rainwater and greywater harvesting sustain both domestic and irrigation needs, while solar power supplements unreliable grid electricity. Irrigation flows naturally by gravity along the slope of the land.

Organic fertilisers and plant growth and protection inputs are prepared on-site using traditional formulations, and complemented by soil-based fungal cultures. Cardamom, varieties of black pepper, turmeric, ginger, coffee and fruits are cultivated with patience and close observation. Drongo Nest has maintained a cultivation calendar from the very beginning to understand the rhythm and behaviour of each crop.

Careful, hands-on processing is followed by documentation of harvest parameters such as conversion ratios and volumetric weights. These serve as guiding indicators of purity, quality and flavour. With each harvest, a growing community gathers at Drongo Nest, ensuring that much of the produce is spoken for even before it leaves the hillside.
