Dr. O John Ma

Dr. O John Ma was a forerunner in developing ultrasonography procedures for trauma, and he started documenting developments in 1992. He is a co-editor of a well-known Emergency Ultrasound textbook published by McGraw-Hill that is regularly revised and still in use. He also edits medical articles due to his prior medical publication experience.

Dr. John Ma volunteered for the American Board of Emergency Medicine from 2002 to 2019. Additionally, he donates money yearly to The Little Sisters of the Poor.

He assisted in creating two $1 million endowed professorships at OHSU in memory of Dr. Jerris Hedges and Dr. John Moorhead, two past department chairs.

John Ma's passion for medicine didn't go away with him; he continues to update several works he co-authored. Significant revisions to ultrasound detection of COVID-19 were made in 2020 in a new contribution to a textbook, Ma and Mateer's Emergency Ultrasound, fourth edition.

Dr. O John Ma, president of the executive medical committee at OHSU, was able to secure the chair position on the professional board because of his commitment to patient safety and superior clinical treatment.

One of the major milestones was the expansion of emergency care in Oregon from one staffed emergency department to five in the twelve years from 2007 to 2019. The budget climbed from $10 million to $28 million over this time, opening more investment opportunities in technology and patient care enhancements.

John Ma also developed innovative commercial and charitable endeavors and helped other doctors complete emergency medicine residency programs.

Portland Monthly Magazine frequently cited Dr. John Ma as a top medical professional. For his work in the emergency room, he was awarded the OHSU Golden Rose in 2009, and the same year, he also got the Pillar of Excellence award for people development. He won numerous honors for being an exceptional doctor at Truman Medical Center and teaching emergency medicine the previous year.

Dr. O John Ma has a variety of stimulating interests and pastimes. He likes the difficulties of the golf field and trying out new restaurants in New York City. He prefers traveling abroad and going to museums across New York City and beyond in his free time. He also had a successful career as a sportswriter and continues to possess expert-level golf course knowledge.
