HOW TO START A CAR
To start a car you must put your foot on the brake insert the key into the ignition and when you turn the key one time it should go to auxiliary or ACC, the second time it should light up the dashboard you should see lights for oil, brakes, ABS, temperature and so on but, the third time you turn the key it should be a quick one to two second hold maybe three seconds then release, most cars today you have a push start as long as you have the key fob inside the car with you all you have to do is put your foot on the brake and hit the start button then the car should automatically start if it doesn’t then you must put the foot on the brake and press the button again NOTE: if you don’t push the brake the dashboard will light up but, the car will not start you must hit the button for it to initiate this is a little confusing because all the cars are different but the same concept will arise.
WHAT IS PRNDL
P stands for parking which locks the transmission into a non-moving gear
R stands for reverse which tells the steering wheel the way you want the back of the car to go so if you turn the wheel to the left the back of the car will go left
N stands for neutral or No gear which you must use the brake when you use neutral because this mean there is no gear so the car will roll the way that is tilted if it's tilt it Forward the car will roll forward if it's tilted backwards the car will roll backwards if it's flat then you must have someone push the car but when you use neutral the brake is always going to be needed
D stands for drive and OD stands for overdrive this is a gear to go forward to give the car momentum if you turn the steering wheel left the front of the car will go left if you turn the steering wheel right the front of the car will go right
one and two are your lower gears which you really don't use unless you're pulling uphill which most people do not use or even think about
The letters on an automatic shifter indicate the transmission’s gear ratios. The most common lettering schemes are “P-R-N-D” and “P-R-N-D-L.”
1. P – Park
‘P’ is the position to use when you’re stopped and getting in or out of the car. It locks the transmission so the car can’t move.
2. R – Reverse
‘R’ is the position to use when you’re backing up. The car will move in reverse gear, which is a lower gear ratio than any of the forward positions.
3. N – Neutral
‘N’ is the position to use when you’re stopped and don’t want the car to be in gear. It’s also the position you use when you’re starting the car.
4. D – Drive
‘D’ is the position to use when you’re driving forward. The transmission will automatically shift through the pre-set gears as you accelerate.
5. L – Low
‘L’ position is similar to Drive but starts in a lower gear. Use this position when going up a hill or towing a heavy load.
Now that we know what the letters and numbers mean, it’ll be easier to understand what position we need to be in for different driving situations. Keep this information in mind the next time you’re behind the wheel!
