Parent company Restaurant Brands International announced Tuesday morning it will modernize the drive-thru experience at more than 10,000 Burger King and Tim Hortons locations by the end of next year, with Popeyes beginning a rollout of its own in late 2020. This includes the installation of about 40,000 screens.

In terms of rollout, Tim Horton installed digital drive-thru menuboards at about 800 locations in the U.S. and Canada by September. Burger King has brought them to 1,500 U.S. restaurants already. Popeyes, as noted before, will begin installing at new locations later this year. The 10,000 target is a mid-2022 projection.

Burger King has been increasingly focused on improving its drive-thru performance since 2020. Last year, the chain began debuting outdoor digital menu boards with the goal of installing 40,000 digital screens that offer predictive selling technology, loyalty integration and remote and contactless payment by mid-2022. As of the end of the third quarter, 50% of Burger King drive-thrus featured these menu boards, with 75% expected to receive them by the end of the year, Cil said during the company's Q3 call in October.

"All this is aimed at addressing operational improvements and addressing drive-thru capacity, which given the volume increases in drive-thru, is really an easy win in terms of driving additional volume in our business," Cil said during the Morgan Stanley conference. "We got too slow and we need to address that to have higher throughput in the business."

Compared to prior reimaging programs that were rolled out in 2011 through 2014, the latest store redesign has more enhancements in the drive-thru, including double drive-thrus where available, outdoor digital menu boards and other technologies, Cil said. Burger King is also testing two new prototypes in Miami, Latin America and the Caribbean this year that have dedicated mobile order and curbside pickup ares, drive-in and walk-up order areas and enhanced drive-thrus with new builds.

TORONTO, Oct. 27, 2020 /PRNewswire/ - Restaurant Brands International Inc. ("RBI") (TSX: QSR) (NYSE: QSR) (TSX: QSP), announced today that it is modernizing the drive-thru experience at more than 10,000 Burger King and Tim Hortons locations, with Popeyes beginning its own rollout later this year. More than 40,000 digital screens are being installed with powerful 'predictive selling' technology, integration with restaurant loyalty programs and the ability for remote, contactless payment, reflecting the strategic importance and value of the drive-thru experience to RBI's iconic restaurant brands.

"We have been on an exciting digital journey to become a leader in our industry," said Josh Kobza, RBI's Chief Operating Officer. "We have attracted exceptional digital and technology talent to join our global team and our digital drive-thru menu board initiative is just one in a series of strategic projects that we are rolling out over the next year to strengthen our business model and improve the level of service we provide to our guests," concluded Kobza.

Predictive Selling: The digital drive-thru menu boards are designed with powerful 'predictive selling' technology designed by RBI's in-house Guest Intelligence team, allowing for special promotions to be tailored based on previous orders, regional weather patterns, the time of day and many other factors. This home-grown technology can dynamically learn preferred ordering habits and also show the latest and trending menu items most-ordered in your location. The RBI Guest Intelligence team will continue to refine our technology to further enhance our guests' ordering experience as we move forward.

Integrated Loyalty Programs: The menu boards have been designed with the ability to integrate loyalty programs, allowing for customized menu options to be displayed that are based on your favorite purchases and redemption history. This functionality is currently live and being tested at 30 locations in Canada with the Tims Rewards loyalty program. All digital drive-thru menu boards in the US and Canada have been designed to accommodate loyalty integration via scanning, Bluetooth or near-field communication.

Remote, Contactless Payment: The digital drive-thru menu boards also have the flexibility to add immediate, remote contactless payment to allow guests to order and pay simultaneously and speed up drive-thru lanes. RBI has partnered with renowned payment solutions provider, Verifone, to develop a new global remote contactless payment device for a drive-thru lane. The first prototype is currently installed at a Tim Hortons restaurant in Canada, with 15 more locations to test this functionality by January 2021.

As of September, Tim Hortons has installed digital drive-thru menu boards at approximately 800 locations in the U.S. and Canada; Burger King has installed digital drive-thru menu boards at more than 1,500 locations in the U.S.; and Popeyes is starting installation at new locations later this year. A typical drive-thru lane includes 4 digital screens, while double drive-thru lanes typically include a total of 7 digital screens. RBI is assessing drive-thru locations and, where possible, is installing double drive-thru lanes to increase capacity and efficiency at our restaurants.

That evening, a black Chevy Impala pulled up to the drive-thru window, according to surveillance footage cited by authorities in a criminal complaint. Harris-Brazell turned to serve the supposed customer, when the driver pulled a gun, demanding cash.

Investigators say they then ascertained that the driver of the Impala was Antoine Edwards, whose daughter Mariah was working in the Burger King at the time. According to a criminal complaint, Mariah allegedly confessed that she, her father, and Harris-Brazell coordinated the robbery at a time when they expected the register to be loaded with cash.

According to a complaint, Mariah claimed that they got Harris-Brazell involved because she works the drive-thru window while Mariah works in the kitchen. It was never part of the plan, however, for Ellis, the co-worker who allegedly shot Harris-Brazell, to come to their aid.

Joshua was working the restaurant's drive-thru when orders were backed up, causing customers to wait a long time, according to the police report. Customer Ashley Mason became enraged and started to yell at Joshua. Mason then threatened to bring her "man" to the restaurant, the report said.

Harris-Brazell had been working as the drive-thru cashier for less than six months at the Burger King, located at 5120 W. Capitol Drive, at the time of the incident. She attended Casimir Pulaski High School.

Around 10:05 p.m. Jan. 2, an Impala pulled up to the drive-thru window of the Burger King shortly after closing. Surveillance camera footage shows a juvenile male answered and briefly spoke to the driver, who then drove away.

The battle of the drive-thrus is tough, with consumers having an abundance of choices, but Burger King took the top spot for 2021. It's been the favorite drive-thru over the past 12 months in these six states: Colorado; Connecticut; Missouri; North Carolina; Utah and especially Hawaii, where searches for Burger King have increased by 600% since 2020.

KFC has seen the biggest increase in trends over the past year in five states including New Mexico, Maine and Alaska. In particular, the states of South Carolina and Alabama searched for "KFC drive thru" the most with a 100% increase in demand for the Colonel's fried chicken in the last 12 months.

The top 10 drive-thrus that have decreased the most in search results include: Tim Hortons; Boston Market; Starbucks, Shake Shack; Carl's Jr.; Culver's; In-N-Out; Steak n Shake; Krispy Kreme and Hardee's.

A news release issued by Deputy Chief of Police Timothy Cougle of the Auburn Police Department on Friday said it was reported that one of the vehicles in the crash went "airborne" and was then resting on its side in the drive-thru.

Upon hitting Barrington's vehicle, Mohamed's vehicle became airborne and then hit a vehicle driven by Gary Girard, 61, of Poland that was waiting in the Burger King drive-thru, the release reports. In addition to hitting Girard's vehicle in the drive-thru, Mohamed hit another vehicle in the drive-thru operated by Nathaniel Simmers, 37, of Auburn.

Later in 2020, Restaurant Brands International Inc., which owns and franchises Burger King and several other quick-service brands, began modernizing the drive-thru experience at select Burger King locations. Features include digital screens with predictive selling capabilities, integration with restaurant loyalty programs, and the ability for remote, contactless payment. This technology allows special promotions to be tailored based on previous orders, regional weather patterns, the time of day and other factors.

Police said 18-year-old Asad Mohamed of Lewiston had been heading south on Center Street about 7:15 p.m. when his car collided with another vehicle driven by Matthew Barrington, 32, of Brunswick, who had been pulling out of the Verizon parking lot.

Girard was at the drive-thru window, his wife in the passenger seat, waiting for a strawberry lemonade and a bacon cheeseburger. The Burger King worker was just handing over the food when the drama unfolded. Advertisement

Haha. I was just at Taco Bell and the drive thru guy gave me a free drink for backing up and pulling forward again. I was so confused. But I still don't fully understand, if I back up and retrigger the sensor then won't there be less actual receipts for orders then the number of times the timer gets triggered. So for instance the manager would have say 20 orders (with receipts) but the timer would hav been triggered 21 times. Or am I still missing something ff782bc1db
