On behalf of all here present I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Effu, Martha, Victor, Bruno, and Preston, on the loss of dear Romeo.
We are gathered here today to remember the life of Romeo Ignacio Pinto and celebrate what he meant to us.
Romeo was born in Nairobi on 4th April 1941. He was the second child of Vincent Francis Babin and Rufina Luiza Maria Pinto.
He completed his primary and secondary education at Dr. Ribeiro Goan School. His Standard one teacher was the late Mrs Jacques who in later years was also his colleague, when he joined the same school as a teacher in January 1962.
In his teaching profession he was admired for his prowess at Mathematics. Indeed he was a fine Math teacher and many of his students hold high positions worldwide.
He was a scout-master of repute and many are the students who enjoyed his company and reveled in his sense of adventure as he always enjoyed the outdoor activities including picnics.
In the early 60's there were a bunch of young enthusiastic newly trained teachers. It was here in the corridors of the Dr. Riberio Goan School that love blossomed between Romeo and Effu. They were married on 9th January 1966 in this very same church.
In pursuit of further education Romeo attended evening classes and studied accountancy. In 1982 he left the teaching profession and joined the world of accountants. His base was at Donald Vincent Limited in the Old Mutual building. He worked hard, doing part time jobs here and there. His honesty and dedication endured him to many, including the owners of Savani's bookshop, Express Bakery and Telco Ltd.
He loved cars and the safari rally and would drive all along the route from Nanyuki to Emali and beyond, following Joginder Singh and Shekar Metha. He even went to Dar-es-salaam as part of the service crew for the late Hiram Muna.
Being gentle and unassuming in nature, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Gardening was his passion and he had the ability to transform a bare piece of land into a luscious, green and beautiful garden. He loved his pets and they loved him in return.
Fast tracking to the millennium, Romeo and Effu often reminisced about their holidays. Trips they made to Murchison Falls in Uganda, Mombasa and Silver Sands in Malindi in their green Ford Taunus. Their Cruise to South Africa, their trip to Addis, the Vatican, and then on to England, Canada and Goa to reunite with relatives and friends.
Romeo was a man of few words, but was forthright in his way of life. Clear, concise and a man of his word. He brooked no nonsense and was quick to upbraid anyone he saw was doing injustice to others. This philosophy he continued throughout his life.
He served the Goan Community with honor in various capacities.
The diagnosis of Kidney failure and the introduction of the word 'dialysis' dampened his spirit in July 2014. However, he faithfully attended his sessions twice a week at the Aga Khan Hospital until his death on Friday 22 nd March.
Dear Friends, today we bid a final farewell to a special human being, a loving husband and a friend. He will be dearly missed.
We thank God for the Gift of Romeo's Life to his dearest Effu, his family and many friends.
Rest in Peace, Romeo.
