Phillip, my dear brother, passed away on July 31st 1968. To this day Phillip is sorely missed by his family. Losing Phillip at the prime of his life left a deep emptiness in his dad, mum and siblings, not to mention his many close friends and neighbours who are now scattered all over the world.
He attended Catholic Parochial School in his early years until 1957 when he transferred to the Dr Ribeiro Goan School where he performed well in both primary and secondary school. He excelled in most subjects though he had an affinity for Religious studies and won many prizes. He graduated with distinction and went on to continue his higher education at the Duke of York school in Nairobi.
Prior to a teaching briefly in Nairobi, he traveled to London in 1968 to pursue a career in Engineering. However, prior to travelling abroad, he suffered bouts of an illness. Dad took him to the best doctors in Nairobi and their recommendations was to see a specialist in the UK. Sadly, after the progression of his illness in the UK and a subsequent operation, he passed away.
Phillip was a devout Catholic and in the months of May would wake up early to attend mass, just making it to school before morning assembly.
As a young lad he was an outgoing guy who loved life and was always so positive and full of spirit. He love sports and participated in football and hockey in the local community.
His care and concern for his family and friends was always foremost. I'll never forget that just prior to leaving for the UK, Phillip bought a large chocolate iced cake and made me cut the cake with him as we both share the same birth date. Just prior to his operation in the UK he sent me postcards of London and wrote that he would bother the nurse to buy a few more to send to me. To me he was a loving and affectionate brother who was taken to our Lord's Kingdom at the tender young age of 22 yrs.
Whenever I meet his friends they often talk about Phillip's high achievements, caring, loving and treasured friendship. I have heard great stories of his kind deeds such as visits to the partially sighted folk and the shopping he did for individuals who were unable to do so. It gives me such joy to know my dear, loving, caring brother made a difference. In summing up, I would also like to quote a sentiment I received from a friend:
'I saw organizational and leadership skills in Phillip at a very early age and no doubt his intelligence, integrity, ego-less personality would have taken our community to dizzying heights'. Sadly Phillip was gone too soon.'
