Ida was born in Goa and came to Kenya as an 8 month old baby. She and the family spent many weekends in Juja where her Dad worked on a sisal plantation. She studied at St. Teresa’s Girls School and later Dr. Ribeiro Goan School. She enjoyed being part of the choir, and joined both the Legion of Mary as well as the Girl Guides.
Following her Mum’s sudden passing, Ida became the matriarch of her family at an early age and looked after her younger siblings and her Dad for many years. In 1958 she married Arthur Azavedo and they had two sons Vincent and Colin. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage before Arthur passed away in 2006. She was a loving wife and caring mother and was always supportive of her sons’ endeavours. Ida started her career as a stenographer at the East African Meteorological Department, where she spent 18 years before moving into private sector employment at Cadbury Schweppes. She worked there for 21 years, rising to be executive assistant to several Managing Directors, and was admired by all for her diligent work and her polite, discreet and warm nature. Later in life she took on the roles of the Secretary of the Dr. Ribeiro Ex-students Association Nairobi, as well as Secretary of the residential tenants association where she lived until her passing; performing both duties with utmost dedication and care.
Throughout her life, Ida was an expert seamstress and loved sewing and knitting for her family and friends. Over the years, she also enjoyed producing several specialty dishes and baking. She keenly followed daily current events and was an avid sports fan. She loved watching her favorite players on television especially in tennis and football. Ida had a great sense of humour. She had an exceptional memory and enjoyed meeting and greeting her friends and having a meal outside with her family.
Ida was ever strong in her faith. We learnt from her in life and her strength will help us go on even after her passing.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
