Felix Rodrigues
My Engineering career started when I joined the Kenya Broadcasting Service (later KBC & VoK) in 1960 as a technician working mainly in Sound Studios. Surprisingly other class members, Bernard, Alex, Adolf, Henry and Levit were also there. It felt like an extension to our school days. In 1963 Alex and I were selected for training with the BBC at their Engineering Training Centre in Evesham, Worcestershire, and at Marconi College in Chelmsford. The training was intensive but we did fund time to travel around England and Europe. Sadly Alex passed away in 1969. I will always treasure the happy memories of our time together in England. Television transmissions had just commenced in Kenya and on my return I was moved to Television Studios where I remained until I resigned in early 1968 .
The uncertain political situation forced me to emigrate to England. I joined the BBC as an engineer in their London Television Studios. It was an interesting and exciting experience for me. I was involved on the technical side with numerous Television productions and coverage of many major events. Later helping young engineers acquire the necessary technical skills. After 32 years I had to leave, having reached the retirement age of sixty. In 2002 I was asked to lecture/train students in Electronics at a local college for a period of not more than four months. Five years on I am still with the college but only part-time. Well, it keeps my brain ticking!
Dris & I love travelling and since retirement we have managed to visit a few interesting places, besides our annual trips to Goa and Portugal. In 2004, having toured Malaysia, we went on to Thailand and arrived in Phuket. A few days later, on Boxing Day, a major earthquake north of Indonesia triggered the devastating tsunami. (where you in th country then) We were lucky to have escaped unscathed'. We still live in Greater London and have two daughters, Suzanne & Marissa,... and no cats or dogs.
