December 1, 1942 – July 2, 2023
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Candida Shantz nee Joanes on July 2, 2023, at the age of 80.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Candida was a devoted mother to Paul Shantz and a beloved sister to Maria Lynch. She was preceded in death by David Shantz (2016). Candida's departure has left a void that will be deeply felt by her nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Candida will forever be remembered for her boundless love and selfless dedication to others. Her warm heart, unwavering strength of character, and a passion for travel set her apart.
Hailing from Goan descent, Candida pursued her nursing studies in the UK before immigrating to Canada in 1978. She served as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, Ont. Throughout her career, she worked in various capacities for several hospitals within Hamilton Health Sciences, including Henderson Hospital (now Juravinski), Hamilton General, and Macassa Lodge.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Candida's true passion resided in traveling. She had an insatiable wanderlust, exploring diverse cultures and meeting people from all walks of life. With determination, she journeyed to nearly 50 different countries, including exotic destinations like South Africa, Antarctica, and China. Her last international trip would be in 2010, when she visited Taiwan to spend precious moments with her son.
Throughout her life, Candida confronted and triumphed over numerous challenges. As a new immigrant to Canada, she embraced the unknown with resilience. As a single mother, she showed unwavering dedication to her family. Candida also faced health battles, including a fight against breast cancer in 2006 and two heart attacks in 1986 and 1999. In her later years, Alzheimer's and Dementia posed cognitive difficulties, but she faced each day with an indomitable spirit, never making excuses and always sporting a radiant smile.
Candida's absence will be deeply felt by many, as she served as a positive role model, inspiring those around her with her strength and courage.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Candida's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Ontario, as a tribute to her enduring spirit and in support of those facing similar challenges.
As we bid farewell to Candida, let us cherish the memories of her vibrant life and the profound impact she had on all who were fortunate enough to know her. May her soul find eternal peace.
